14th amendment All persons born or naturalized in the United


States and
subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of
the United
States and of the state wherein they reside. No
state shall
make or enforce any law which shall abridge the
privileges or
immunities of citizens of the United States; nor
shall any state
deprive any person of life, liberty, or property,
without due
process of law; nor deny to any person within its
jurisdiction
the equal protection of the laws.
Civil rights and civil liberties Civil rights- those rights promised to every U.S.
citizen because of the 14th amendment

Civil liberties- the freedom of a citizen to exercise


customary rights, as of speech or assembly,
without interference by the government
Discrimination Individuals treated unfairly because of their race,
religion, gender, ethnic group or physical disability
Unlawful- making people ride in the back of bus
because of color
Lawful- smokers, adults only, bank loans based on
income
