SIOP Lesson Plan

Standards: N/A

Theme: Hair Treatment

Lesson Topic: Hair Care!

Objectives:
● LANGUAGE
○ Students will be able to verbally explain characteristics of their hair.
(HOW?)
○ Students will be able to verbally identify and write a hair type after being
provided characteristics.
○ Students will be able to verbally identify and write hair products relative to
a described hair type. (GOOD)
● CONTENT
○ Students will classify characteristics of hair (HOW?)
○ Students will identify their hair type and maintenance products (HOW?)

Learning Strategies: GOOD!

● Concept Definition Map- This will be very helpful for students as the vocabulary
in the lesson may be unknown to most. Through this map, students will be able to
understand what the word means along with different examples to further their
understanding. This will help with the content objectives as students will be able
to identify their hair type through these vocabulary terms.

● Think-Pair-Share- This strategy will be implemented during the activity. Students

will work with another partner and they will each come up with ways to help the
other maintain their hair. They will then share the different ways they come up
with with the class as a whole. This strategy will help with the language objectives
as students will be able to explain different hair products that they can
recommend for their partner.

● Round Robin- This will be helpful for students at the end of the lesson. To wrap
everything up, we are going to give students a scenario about a hair type and they
will work with their table to come up with a solution to help the hair and then
share it with the class. This strategy is very effective especially since students
work well when building ideas off of eachother. This strategy also helps with the
language objectives as students will be coming up with a plan on how to maintain
a specific hair type provided to them using what they learned throughout the
lesson.

Key Vocabulary

● Curl pattern- there are four types: curly, wavy, straight, coily
● Porosity– the ability of hair to absorb and retain moisture,
● Hair diameter- the width of and individual hair strand
● Density- refers to how much hair (individual strands) on one’s scalp
● Grease- the buildup of natural secretion from scalp glands
● Elasticity- the extent to which a single hair can stretch before returning to its
original state

Materials

● Powerpoint
● Sheet for filling out
● Stylist sheet to identify hair type and recommended products

Motivation
- To build students' background knowledge, we will ask students to discuss their
hair routine. After we discuss, we will explain about the lesson and how it will provide
better insight into their specific hair type and how that correlates to finding the best
products for their hair.

Presentation
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction,
feedback)

Prior knowledge is activated by class discussion on their current hair routine and their
description of their hair.
Before describing the six characteristics of hair, we provide a vocabulary slide and
concept map for students to complete (vocabulary strategy)
Our lesson objectives will be made clear throughout the presentation: students will be
able to verbally explain and classify characteristics of hair and identify its corresponding
hair type and products for maintenance (language and content objectives).
This will be supported through a “think, pair, and share” activity; students will
interact with one another to identify hair types and their corresponding products for
maintenance. They will also engage in kinesthetic learning, determining the elasticity of
their hair by dipping a hair strand in a cup of water.
At the end of the lesson, we will implement the red robin strategy for reinforcement and
its function as a formative assessment; students work together to determine a hair type
and its corresponding products for maintenance. We will provide informal feedback
when necessary, confirming responses and scaffolding when necessary.

Practice and Application

After our presentation, students will implement their knowledge of hair characteristics
to identify hair types and their corresponding products for maintenance. Working in
pairs, one student acts as a hairdresser while the other functions as a customer in need
of a new hair product and a better understanding of his/her hair type. The customer
explains the six characteristics of their hair in hopes of learning their hair type and
products for maintenance, using their previously filled sheet for reference. The stylist
then determines their hair type and recommended products, explaining why these will
help with their customer’s hair. They then reverse roles.

Review and Assessment

Students will be provided with a scenario on a specific hair type. In groups, students
devise a hair routine addressing how these characteristics determine its type and why
the products for maintenance will help with care.

This reinforces understanding of vocabulary (for they are the hair characteristics) , the
ability to match hair type with its corresponding characteristics and products, and
engage in higher order thinking, as they develop an understanding of the connection
between characteristics of hair and why the products help their hair type.

Extension

Students devise their own hair routine, identifying methods of care and products for
maintenance.
