In the poems An African Thunderstorm by Olive Senior and Bird Shooting

season by David Rubadiri the theme of nature is seen being protrayed

throughout the two poems using literary devices. In this essay I will be

comparing these two poems and examining the literary devices used by both

poets.

The poem An African Thunderstorm, Rubadiri talks about a thunderstorm over

the continent of Africa , how extreme the thunderstorm is and how it affects

the people of the land. In the poem the persona uses auditory imagery to

bring forward the strength of the thunderstom in lines ‘screams of delighted

children’ , ‘toss and turn’ , “in the din of the whirling wind’ expressing the

theme of nature and how harsh mother nature can be . This line implies how

the screams of the children are mixed and drowned out in the wind of the

thunderstorm showing how strong and powerful it is.

In the poem Birdshooting Season Olive senior describes the preparation of a

sesonal event kept in the caribbean that is participated by men only. In the

lines ‘darkness shouldering their packs , their guns, they leave Olive uses

imagery to describes the darkness of the morning in which they left

representing the scenery of nature.
