1. In a democracy why is universal adult franchise important?

Ans. The idea of Universal Adult Franchise is based on equality because it states that every adult
in the country irrespective of their differences have the right to vote. Therefore, Universal Adult
Franchise is important in a democracy.

2. Re-read the box on Article 15 and state two ways in which this Article addresses
inequality?

Ans. The two ways in which Article 15 addresses inequality are:

(a) The state shall not discriminate against any citizen on the grounds only of religion, caste,
gender, place of birth or any of them. (b) No citizen shall be stopped from going to public places
or using wells, tanks and roads.

3. In what ways was Omprakash Valmiki’s experience similar to that of the Ansaris?

Ans. (a) The dignity of both Omprakash Valmiki and Ansaris was violated because of the way in
which they were treated. (b) Omprakash Valmiki was asked to sweep the school ground which
made him feel as if he was not equal to all other students in the school. (c) The Ansari’s dignity
was also hurt when the people refused to lease their apartments to them and when the property
dealer suggested that they should change their names.

4. What do you understand by the term “all persons are equal before the law”? Why do you
think it is important in a democracy?

Ans. a) It means that the Indian constitution recognizes every person, equal before the law.
b) No one is considered above the law. c) Everyone has to abide by law and anyone who violates
the law, will be punished, according to the law.
Equality is the soul of democracy. We know that democracy is a form of government which gives
equal importance and recognition to all. If inequalities on the basis of race, religion, caste, etc.
continue to exist, democracy would never flourish.

5. Write about the Disabilities Act of 1995 passed by the government of India.

Ans. The government of India passed the Disabilities Act of 1995, according to this Act: (a)
Persons with disabilities have equal rights. (b) The government has to provide free education and
integrate them into main stream school. (c) All public places including buildings, schools, etc.
should be accessible and provided with ramps.
