Argument Outline: Utilitarianism

The goal of this assignment is to compose a strong argument for utilitarianism as opposed to
deontology. This team needs to assign roles, then likely dive into smaller groups to work on
specific aspects of the argument. Everyone should be using class time to prepare for the
argument, so if you are unsure what to do, ask your teammates what can be done to help.
Claim The foundation of Deontology is the justification of societal dogmas
rather than unequivocal basic common sense. Deontology is an
extremely flawed ideology, Deontology ignorantly ignores most if not
all; advantageous choices & logic, and favor the few to please their
righteous morals .

Reason Utilitarianism asks us to look beyond self-interest to consider the

immediate interests of all persons affected by our actions.

it is morally permissible to kill one in order to save five, even if that

one person is possibly a close friend/Family member.
But if you use deontology ideologies you’re saying consequences
don't matter and if we used the last example, a Deontologist might kill
5 people (that yes, you don’t know, but are still people) instead of the
one because that one may be close to them. That is morally and
fundamentally flawed.

Support You don’t need to read this- Looking through Truman’s eyes as he
decided it was necessary to drop the bombs on Japan, in a utalitarian
lense, it would be necessary to drop the bombs for the sake of the
majority: everyone across the world involved in the war, for the
detriment of the people in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Through a
deontologist lense it would be necessary to drop the bomb just to end
the war, the placement of the bomb may have been different, perhaps
Tokyo because the foundation of deontology isn’t for who it affects
and the outcome, but only the outcome without the lives lost in mind-
so the placement of the bombs could have been different due to the
nature of not taking into account the lives lost to the bombs. 3.49
million lives may have been lost instead.

Warrant While the Hiroshima bomb killed somewhere around we 129,000 to

226,000 civilians WWII killed 70 to 80 million people. With the
Hiroshima bomb ending WWII it provented the war from going on
longer and killing more people. More people would have probably
died if the war went on much longer. If you put it into the lease of
Utilitarianism, having this point of view you must take into account
the lives at stake, and what their sacrifice will accomplish for the
majority of the people across the world.

Possible Responses Against the point of the Hiroshima bomb those people were inocent
civillians. Sure WWII killed millions of people but those were
soldiers. And in some cases of utilitarianism the minority is punished
or harmed for the benefit of the majority. Neither Utilitarianism or
Deontology are perfect but more often than not Utilitarianism is
better. Even if you have to hurt the minority like in the trolley
problem it is better to help the majority because more lives are at
stake,
the doctrine that actions are right if they are useful or for the benefit of a majority.

Title Deontology

Summary Deontology is a moral theory that judges if something is right or wrong based
on rules, instead of the consequences of said action. “Action is more important
than consequences,” “Kant [a notable historical deontologist] argued that it was
not the consequences of actions that make them right or wrong, but the motives
of the person who carries out the action.
