Lesson 6: Origin of Islam

In this lesson, we will first recall the different terminologies related to Islam. These terms will be
used frequently in the upcoming lessons. Therefore, you are expected to master and understand the meaning
of the terms, not by memorizing it, but by comprehending its deeper meaning and application.
 DAY 1

Concept Notes:

- The Arabic term Islam means surrender, particularly putting faith in and entrusting oneself
totally to the will of the one God.
- Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity with about 1.8 billion
Muslim worldwide.
- The follwers of Islam are called Muslims.
- Muslims are monotheistic and worship one, all-knowing God, who in Arabic known as Allah.
- The followers of Islam aim to live a life of complete submission to Allah. They believe that
nothing can happen without Allah’s permission but humans have free will.
- Islam teaches that Allah’s word was revealed to the prophet Muhammad through the angel
Gabriel.
- Muslims believe sevral prophets were sent to teach Allah’s law. They respect some of the
same prophets as Jews and Christians, including Abraham, Moses, Noah and Jesus. Mus;lim
contend that Muhammad was the final prophet.
- Mosques are palces where Muslims worship.
- Some important Islamic holy palces include the Kaaba shrine in Mecca, the Prophet
Muhammad’s mosque in Medina.
- The crescent moon and star has been adopted in some predominantly Muslim countries as a

symbol of Islam.

Concept Notes:
 Islam is a complete way of life. It is the guidance for all mankind from Allah.
 Classical scholars of Islam have condensed the teachings of Prophet Muhammad into a few
statements. These comprehensive statements touch every aspect of our lives. Some of them
are:
 God is Pure and does not accept anything unless it is pure and God has commended the
faithful with what He commanded the prophets
 Part of a person’s good observance of Islam is to leave aside what does not concern him
 The core of Islam in the fewest possible words is “it is within the word Islam itself: to serve,
worship, and lovingly submit to God.”
 It means submission and obedience.
 Islam teaches that one can only find peace in one’s life by submitting to Almighty God
(Allah) in heart, soul, and deed.
The followers of Islam religion have six articles of Islamic faith that includes:
 To believe in God
 To believe in unseen
 To believe in Prophethood
 To believe in revelation
 To believe in day of judgement
 To believe in divine decree
Muslim follow five basic pillars that are essential to their faith. These includes:
 Shahada – to declare one’s faith in God and belief in Muhammad
 Salat – to pray five times a day (at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset and evening)

 Zakat – to those in need
 Sawm – to fast during Ramadan
 Hajj – to make pilgrimage to Mecca at least once during a person’s lifetime if the person is
able
