LN – 5 – METALS AND NON-METALS: Keypoints – 2
I. METALS BURNT IN AIR ( O2):
Metal oxides + water  Metal Hydroxide ( Alkali )
 Eg - 1 : Na2O + H2O  ________
 Eg – 2 : K2O + H2O  ________
 All metals do not react with Oxygen at the same rate.
 Eg-1: Na, K – (open) react vigorously – catches fire– to protect –
stored in kerosene.
 Eg-2 : Mg, Al, Zn, Pb – surfaces covered with a thin layer oxide.
 Eg-3 : Fe does not burn, but Iron filling burn vigorously on heating
 Eg-4 : Cu does not burn, on heating – black coloured layer – 2CuO.
 Eg-5 : Au & Ag – Does not react with oxygen even at high temp.
 Anodising : Process of forming thick oxide layer of Al.
II. METALS REACT WITH WATER:
Metal + Water  Metal oxide + Hydrogen
 All metals do not react with Water at the same rate.
 Eg- 1 : Na, K – react violently with cold water. ( Exothermic)
 K + H2O  _____ + ____ + _______
 Na + H2O  _____ + ____ + _______
 Eg – 2 : Ca – less violent, its *floating on water because the bubbles
of Hydrogen gas formed stick to the surface of the metal.
 Ca + H2O  _________ + ______
 Eg- 3 : Mg does not react with cold water, but it reacts with hot
water. It also floats of water.
 Mg + H2O  _________ + ______
 Eg – 4 : Al, Fe, Zn – do not react with hot/ cold water, it reacts with
steam.
 Al + H2O  _______ + ______
 Fe + H2O  ______ + _____
 Eg- 5 : Au, Ag, Cu, Pb – Do not react with water at all.
