CHAPTER 1

This part of the study will include the introduction, background of the study, problem
statement, rationale, scope and limitation, and hypothesis. All of these sections will
assist readers in understanding where the researcher's topic is heading.

Introduction

The researchers focused much of their attention on the relationship between taking
care of plants and the human emotions of Grade 10 students. Taking care of plants is
vital because it can help everyone’s health. Plants provide everyone with food and
oxygen and can also be used as alternative medicine, climate, and more. Taking good
care of plants is essential because it significantly impacts our environment and health.
It can help the world grow and become a better place; It can also help animals by caring
for their habitat and natural food source. Plants are simple to grow and care for,
exceptionally when adequately cared for. (Clark, 2018)(Cath Foundation. 2021)

Providing lots of light for 4-6 hours every day for indoor plants might help them develop
quickly. Water plants regularly, but do not water the leaves; instead, water the roots.
Clean the dust from the plants because dust might hinder their growth. Keep the plants
away from air vents because this causes houseplants to because of a lack of humidity.
While frequent watering can help, placing indoor plants near air vents is a more
significant issue. The constant airflow from the heater or air conditioner will dry up the
plants' leaves and cause them to die. To remedy this issue, remove them from any room
vents. (Carberry, 2022)

For outdoor plants, make sure the plants have enough water. Weed the garden regularly;
If the weed cannot be removed, it can kill the garden. Mulch the garden every few
months, and make sure it does not cover the plants, as this will inhibit their growth.
Remove dead plants because if the dead plant is not removed, it will spread and harm
the plant. (Davis, 2020)

Additionally, when it comes to human emotions, there are many types of emotions that
every person feels and experiences. There are six primary emotions, according to Paul
Eckman, a psychologist from the 1970s: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, rage, and
surprise. Emotions enable people to interact with one another. People's emotions are
uncontrollable, and feelings are influenced by their moods. Because of emotions, people
can engage with one another and comprehend how they feel. Emotions can also
influence how people act. People can cause bodily harm to one another when they are
unable to regulate their emotions.

In addition, plants can help mental states by calming down people's emotions so they
can think much more clearly. In today's hectic world of activity and the ongoing battle
between professional and work lives, people regularly find themselves struggling with
stress and worry. This anxiety can lead to physical and mental health problems that
disrupt a person's daily life. In such a stressful environment, few artificial remedies can
restore a person's psychological health. Gardening and plant interaction is both highly
soothing pastimes. There are numerous stress-relieving plants for mental health in
nature, and studies have proven that some plants are more beneficial to human health
than others. (Mcquillan, 2019)

Plants and humans are inseparably connected. The biophilia notion was developed in
1984 by naturalist and writer E.O. Wilson. According to Wilson, humans have a natural
affinity for plants and other living things. Wilson. More than three decades of global
research have confirmed the hypothesis and proved that natural environments
substantially enhance joyful feelings and decrease negative ones. (Das, 2022)

Professor Roger S. Ulrich, Ph.D., of Texas A&M University's College of Architecture and
Medicine, has studied hospital gardens and their effects on patients' health. In the
United States, hospital architects and administrators are now using his results, along
with many others, to change how new medical facilities are built. In Ulrich's research, it
was discovered that patients who saw natural surroundings recovered more quickly and
had less post-surgery issues. These elements could be a plant, a window that looks out
onto nature, or even a piece of art showing the natural world. (Ambius in Biophilia
Industry Insights, 2022)
Sending plants or flowers to someone who is recovering brightens their environment
and, according to some researchers, may also hasten the healing process. In a 2009
study, it was discovered that having plants in the room helped to recover surgical
patients with their pain, worry, and weariness. Patients also expressed satisfaction with
their recuperation space, demonstrating the mood-boosting effects of just being among
plants.

To summarize, plants have been significant to human emotions, especially for those
who have mental disorders, because they give people concentration and peace. Once
people see a plant, it helps them feel calm and relaxed. Plants boost people's energy
because a positive or natural environment can make people more energetic and happy.
When people are energized, they put much more effort into their work and have extra
energy for other responsibilities. (Hes

Statement of the Problem

A. General Statement

This study attempts to determine the effects of taking care of plants on the selected
grade 10 students in SAGIS.

B. Specific Objectives:

Mainly, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. To observe the emotions of Grade 10 who cares for a plant and those who
do not take care of the plants.

2. To enumerate the benefits when students take good care of a plant

3. To determine how plants can help every individual

Rationale

Individuals who spend more time outside in nature are more positive and will have a
healthier life than those who spend most of their time indoors. Communing with the
natural environment boosts people's sensations of vitality and energy, which improves
their general mental health. Outside the presence of trees and ornamental horticulture
has been shown to boost people's mental health and give them a more optimistic
attitude. People who spend time outside daily are less likely to be depressed or worried
and have fewer mental health problems. (Barnicle et al. 2003)

Our health can suffer from various factors if we do not have access to nature. It has
been associated with symptoms of sadness and anxiety, asthma, cardiovascular
disease, and impaired immune function. Houseplants provide many of us with an
essential connection to nature. While there is not much research on houseplants'
specific mental health benefits, multiple studies have shown how crucial green space
and gardening are for mental health. One study, for example, revealed that those who
garden daily have higher happiness levels and lower stress levels than those who do
not. (Chalmin-Pui, 2022)

The researchers pursued this topic because they wanted the readers to appreciate the
plants and not invalidate every individual's emotions. Also, the researchers wanted to
help people secretly fight depression or deal with mental health problems. The more a
person is cooped up inside and not exposed to fresh air, the worse they will feel. One of
the researchers, Ms. Ufana Wil Galicia, experienced an anxiety attack in 2019. According
to the doctor, once a person feels they cannot breathe, they need to go outside and relax
while feeling the fresh air.

Scope and Limitation

In this study, Grade 10 SAGIS students' reactions to caring for plants and experiencing
human emotions are the main subjects. If the study is a success, it will teach students
about the value of plants and how they may be especially helpful when it comes to
human emotions. This study can take a while because the researchers must conduct a
survey, among other things.

To get the result, the researchers will separate the grade 10 students who don't take
care of the plants from those in grade 10 who do so that the researchers can survey
them and see the differences. This study will use different plants, and the grade 10
students that will be surveying will not spend money, nor will the researchers, so there is
no estimated cost in this paper.

The researchers will ask the grade 10 students to bring plants (any plants they have in
their house) and put them in the garden of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Integrated School of
Cavite. The selected grade 10 students will take care of the plants in the school daily.
The researchers will use the responses of grade 10 students in SAGIS to determine
whether plants can genuinely help people's emotions.

Hypothesis

NULL HYPOTHESIS

There are no significant effects between the effects of taking care of plants on human
emotions and not taking care of plants.

ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS

There is a significant effect between the effects of taking care of plants on human
emotions and not taking care of plants.
