Determining a Faulty Field Bridge Rectifier

This document pertains to Mentor II & Quantum III’s Size 2 & 3

Symptoms: No display and the drive is blowing fuses on the MDA6 Power board.

Tools Needed:

Digital Multi-Meter Megger

Phillips screwdriver Fine Point Marker
Masking Tape

DO NOT ASSUME POWER IS OFF BECAUSE THE DRIVE DISPLAY APPEARS

DEAD OR NO FANS ARE HEARD.
THE VOLTAGE APPLIED TO THIS DRIVE CAN BE LETHAL IF TOUCHED !

Motor Field Shorted ??

1. In diagnosing what is causing your drive to blow fuses one should check the
actual field of the motor. The information that we will need will directly come
from your motor’s nameplate. With the unit powered down we will use our
Digital Multi-Meter and compare it to the value directly off of the nameplate.
Keep in mind that the value off of the nameplate will vary approximately +/- 20%
proportional to the motor temperature.

2. If the unit ohmically checks good we still can not rule out the field. Sometimes
when the resistance of the motor field checks ok, we still could have a
breakdown in the field’s insulation. The best way to determine if this is the fault
we must Megger or ”Meg” the motor. Consult the following Technical Note
CTTN121 for details or
http://www.emersonct.com/download_usa/techNotesMisc/CTTN121.pdf

¾ Use a Megger to check for shorts or insulation breakdown in the motor. The
field as well as the armature circuits should be checked. Disconnect the
armature and field wires form the drive before using the megger - Failing
to do so can result in drive damage which will not be covered under
warranty!!!

¾ All of the Readings should be open.

Shorted Field Bridge Rectifier

1. The field bridge rectifier is located under the green side panel. To access this
one must remove the four Phillips screws that are located in the corner of the
drive.

Once the covers are removed the inside of the drive should look similar to the picture
shown below.

2. Use your Digital Multi-Meter in diode checker to read across the field
connections. It is important to remove the field connections to the motor prior to
doing this. With your negative lead connected to F1 (+) we will use our
positive lead as our probe. A good field will read approximately as follows -
(all of the test points were taken on the MDA 6 board pictured below)

Terminal F2 (-) your meter should read 0.485

Terminal L11 your meter should read 0.485
Terminal E1 your meter should read 0.485
Terminal E2 your meter should read 0.485
Terminal EF- your meter should read 0.8

With your free lead take the reading of the second Bridge. The exposed pins with no
wire connected should read as follows –

0.48

0.8

EF –
Test Point

Now on the power board with your positive lead on F1 (+) and your negative lead on
F2 (-) your meter should read OL ( essentially open circuit )

3. If any of the readings of the previous steps did not match up according to the
given values one should consult the following Replacement Instructional guide
CTRI122 or

http://www.emersonct.com/download_usa/replacementInstructions/CTRI222.pdf

4. At this point, we will now label each of the wires that are coming off of the bridge
rectifier and verify that they are going to the proper location, also ensure that the
the wires going to the power board are correct (E1, E2, E3, ect.). Below is a
diagram of the proper wiring of the field bridges to the power board.

5. After we have verified proper wiring, we will disconnect them from the power
board and tape each wire off separately. Power up the drive, if one of E1 –E3
fuses blow then the drive’s SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) is faulty and the
power board will need to be replaced. To replace the MDA6 Power board (Part
number 9200-0735) you can refer to the replacement guide CTRI203 or
