Egg Crash Vehicle Planning Document

Objective: Design and build a vehicle which rolls, carries an egg, and protects the egg in the event of a
crash.

Challenge: Your challenge is to design and build a car with the greatest kinetic energy/momentum
using recyclable materials. Your car must be able to carry a raw egg down an inclined racetrack ramp
and protect it during a crash with a concrete block. Read the rules/specifications listed below before
beginning your design process and remember that in order to win, you must have BOTH a car with the
greatest kinetic energy/momentum AND an egg occupant that survives the crash unharmed.

● The driver (egg) must be able to see clearly through the front of the vehicle. (i.e., it cannot be in
a closed or solid container) (2cm of egg must be visible)
● No part of the egg may be glued or taped to any part of the car or safety device.
● The egg must remain securely in the vehicle at all times.
● The “front” of the car is defined as the end of the car that the driver is facing, just as if it were a
real car.
● The car may not travel down the ramp backwards.
● The vehicle must fit within the limits of the ramp supplied by the instructor. (≤15 cm wide, ≤30 cm
long)
● Vehicle designs must allow for easy access to and removal of the egg (occupant) for getting into
the car and inspection after the crash.
● There can be no physical contact between the vehicle and the designer once the vehicle has
been released onto the track.
● No motorized devices, batteries, or other remote control items may be used to power the car.
May only operate on mechanical power.
● No Batteries, even for looks…

Materials
You may use any materials to build your vehicle. Some general materials will be provided but not all.
Some suggestions are:
Wood, Matte Board, Plastic, Rubber Bands (any size or length), String (any size or length), Wheels,
Cotton or Cotton Balls, Straws, Springs (purchased or hand-made), Rubber, Styrofoam, Sponges,
Cardboard, Poster board, Cups, boxes, etc.
Food boxes, Tape/Glue (not to attach the egg directly to the device or the car), Rubber bands, String,
Straws, Cups, Styrofoam, Plastic Wrap, Bubble Wrap, Cotton Balls, Toilet paper tubes, Bottle caps,
Craft sticks, Foil, Wire, Egg cartons
