RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Definition (in industry) work directed toward the innovation, introduction, and
improvement of products and processes.
Activities Basic research, applied research, and experimental development
all fall within the category of research and development. Basic
research is described as effort done to learn new things without
thinking specifically about applications.
Importance Research has always been a crucial component of any
organization, no matter how big or small. It is not just important in
the medical or scientific fields; many companies in the
pharmaceutical industry have a full-fledged R&D division with
quality control to ensure product quality and the development of
new technologies and products.
Objective 1. Obtain new ideas or knowledge

3. Increase company’s sales and profit
The method by which a business generates new knowledge that it
may use to develop new technology, goods, or services that it will
either use internally or sell.
Process Method The activities involved in the research and development process
fall into three broad categories: pure research, applied research,
and development activities. Each of these is crucial to the final
result of the R&D process and is typically required for significant
advancements to take place.

TYPES OF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT


Basic Research. Has its objectives a fuller knowledge or understanding of the subject
under study, rather than a practical application.

Applied Research. Directed towards gaining knowledge or understanding necessary


for determining the means by which a recognized and specific need may be met.

Development. Research creates knowledge and development designs, and builds


prototypes to prove their feasibility.
