“Growing Pains” Narrative Explanation

My original song,” Growing Pains”, is a mixture of everything I learned from all

five modules throughout this semester.

When it comes to understanding the self, sometimes it feels like it is all too much.
Our problems in life could be amplified and feel like the end of the world when, in reality,
a lot of these issues could stem from the fact that one still has a weak sense of self.
This could lead to one feeling burnt out, and lost, hence, the first two verses of the song.

As we focus more on the second module where it is revolving around the thinking
and feeling self, I integrated the consequential feelings that a person may experience
when feeling clueless as they go along their life journey. Both the symptoms found
within the thinking self have to be used, especially the ABC model when it comes to
deciphering what to do next and how you should react in this type of life crisis.
Identifying and observing one’s emotions as they go through it is an integral part of this
as well and I express emotion regulation through my lyrics “take a breath”, and “sit
awhile” as a form of the “situation selection” method.

Most of the inspiration for this song derived from module three. As people
develop from adolescents to adults, everything can feel unfathomably terrifying. The
lyrics “I can feel you’re scared, think you’re unprepared”, is a theme I noticed throughout
module three since, more often than not, people do not know what they are going
through and usually think that they are going in blind. This is a big reason why the name
of my song is “growing pains”. As it zooms in quite a lot on the psychosocial stages of
development and the concept of emerging adulthood, those going through them without
having any idea what is in store may feel alone and frazzled especially in some stage of
emerging adulthood. However, the more they interact with others who are on the same
page of life as they are, they will come to learn that all of this is a necessary part f
growing up and that all the struggles they are undergoing because of are caused by the
fact that they are growing.
Module four is what played more of a sub-text role in my composition. The part of
the individuation process where you go on with life on your own, journeying through all
the monsters and hardships; this would all seem hopeless if you did not have a support
system to look to. Our families, our “barkadas”, and our significant others are part of the
lyric that says, “a million eyes will see you grow, the warmth of life will guide you home”.
We all have a long way to go in our individual journeys, but there is great importance in
our eternal “separate togetherness”.

The biggest and most important lesson that I have learned from all the modules
is a realization. The realization that everything that I am going through right now as an
adolescent entering adulthood is normal. I had never felt so understood and seen. It
provided me with a wonderful amount of comfort knowing that for every moment I felt
alone in any of these psychosocial and psychological stages of development, there was
and always is someone else out there who is going through it with me. I am incredibly
grateful to have studied this course as it provided me with knowledge and I tend to find
comfort in that.

My goal for this song is to be able to help these people know that they are not
alone when they feel hopeless, as if they cannot survive in this world with all its
challenges and responsibilities. Not everyone has the privilege to study and learn the
things I have during this course, so this would be my way of sharing that same feeling of
being seen and understood. As someone who has always found solace in music and
the messages they hold, I have decided to compose and produce a song to provide its
listeners with that feeling of comfort, the feeling of being seen and heard. As we trudge
through the battlefield of survival, this song will hopefully serve as a trench where our
silent soldiers can rest and be filled with the encouragement the lyrics of my
composition wish to bring.
