II – A BSBA – SM

1. What is Gift and Gratuities?

Gift refers to “something” willingly given to someone (e.g., a present or sum of money).
Meanwhile, gratuity is more likely the same, but is usually comes with a sum of money in exchange
for a service.

2. What is the difference between a gift and gratuity?

Gift refers to willingly giving someone a “something” in exchange for maybe a future
benefit, or intentionally befriending someone to earn an advantage over something (e.g., a
promotion or a discount). On the other hand, gratuity refers to obligating oneself to give
“something” to someone with or without any hidden intentions – depending on the purpose of why
it is given to someone. However, both of these two is almost the same and is usually judged
depending on what context – a gift maybe is just a gift without any underlying intentions same with
gratuity.

3. Why do gifts create conflicts of interest?

Gift can be used as an advantage of getting a benefit to someone over something because
gift is given not only by itself – it comes with “delightful” words that may trigger someone’s
conscience; it may have some hidden intentions to win over something, or it may not. Moreover, a
gift is a kind gesture that may trigger one’s emotion in which that person can now be easily
persuaded.
