• I- thinking, acting, and feeling self
• Me- physical characteristics, psychological
capabilities that makes you who you are.
▫ (ex. I have trust issues because I was betrayed
before)

Carl Rogers
▫ I- acts and decides
▫ Me- think or feel about you as an object
• Self Identity- composed of personal
characteristics, social roles and responsibilities
as well as our affiliations that define who one is

• Self Concept- what basically comes to your

mind when you are asked about who you are

• These 2 are not fixed over time(ex. I was a

varsity player in 5th grade(past)college
student(present), future politician(future).

• Carl Rogers- Self Schema

Self Schema
• Organized system or collection of knowledge about
who we are
▫ SELF=hobbies, family, religion, nationality, etc.

• They are not passive receivers, they actively shape

and affect how you see, think and feel about things.

• Ex. When someone states your first name even if

they are not talking about you, your attention is
drawn to them
• When you are from rinconada currently situated
in manila then you hear a person talking in
rinconada, it catches your attention

• Current researches states that the frontal lobe of

the brain is the specific area in the brain
associated with the processes concerning the self

• Nature- self is shaped based from the

environment

• Nurture- self is shaped based from the parents

• Nature vs nurture
• Nature and nurture

• Theory of Symbolic Interactionism

▫ We do not create ourselves out of nothing (tell me
who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are)
▫ We need others to affirm and reinforce who we
think who we are (likes in facebook), we tend to
act, dependent on how others would say about you
▫ What we think is important to us may also have
been influenced by what is important in our social
or historical context. (chinese people gives so
much importance when it comes to money and
businesses)
• Self awareness- being aware of our self concept
▫ Private self or your internal standards and private
thoughts and feelings
▫ Public self or your public image commonly geared
toward having a good presentation of yourself to
others

3 self schema of Self-awareness

▫ Actual self
▫ Ideal self (ex. You want to be a silent type but
you’re very talkative).
▫ Ought self (ex. Being friendly in a foreign place)
-these 3 should be in line with one another to avoid
agitation, dejection and other negative emotion
• Self awareness- can keep you from doing
something dangerous ( ex. Knowing that there’s
an exam tom, you opted to review instead of
playing computer games)
• Too much concern on self awareness is called
self consciousness- concerned about being
observed and criticized by others.
• Deindividuation- loss of individual self-
awareness and individual accountability in
groups.(ex. Mass demonstration)
• Self esteem- defined as a our own positive or
negative perception or evaluation of ourselves.
We improve it sometimes(negatively or
positively through Social Comparison)
Social Comparison Theory
• We learn about ourselves, appropriateness of
our behavior, as well as our social status by
comparing ourselves to other people.
• Comparing to some better than us can be a
source of motivation but mostly, made us
realized our weaknesses
• Comparing where finding out that we are better
to the person we compared our self improves self
esteem
• Group comparison

Self evaluation Maintenance Theory

- We can feel threatened when someone
outperforms us especially when that person is
close to us
- Reaction in 3 ways:
- distance or redefine relationship, Silent treatment,
change of friends, be closer to the person hoping
for contagion
- change of career to preserve self-esteem
- Training, seminars and etc. to be a better you
• Narcissism- overly high self esteem, self
admiration and self centeredness.
▫ They are a bad partner for they engage in
relationships only to serve on themselves

-there’s a thin line between narcissism and high self

esteem (a sample of test to take for self esteem
measurement is Rossenberg Scale
-you have to be honest with your answer to get a
valid result.

-commonly, people with high self-esteem are

outgoing, adventurous and adaptable in lot of
situation, friendly, approaches first
• Bullies, experiment on abusive behaviors with
drugs, alcohol, and sex.
