1. Formalism ( What are the forms that can be found in the painting above? Briefly describe each. )

Van Gogh painted various stages of the harvest in an effort to depict peasant life and work on
the land, a recurring theme in his work. Several carts, a wheat field that has only been partially mowed,
and ladders are all visible. He called the piece La moisson, or "The Harvest," because a reaper was busy
in the background. According to Van Gogh, the canvas "absolutely kills all the rest," and he considered
it to be one of his best works of art.

2. Expressionism ( How do you think the artist was feeling when he created the artwork? )

In this painting of the flat landscape around Arles in southern France, you can almost feel the
dryness and heat. Van Gogh captured the atmosphere of a summer day by combining the azure blue of
the sky with yellow and green tones for the land. He toiled in the wheat fields for days on end under
the scorching sun. This was an extremely productive period for him, during which he completed ten
paintings and five drawings in just over a week, until a heavy storm ended the harvest season.
