PHY 102: Test Problems related to Divergence and Gauss Divergence Theorem

[1] Take the functions mentioned in the problem 1.15 (page 18 of D.J. Griffiths) and calculate the
divergence.

[2] Solve the problem 1.16 on the same page. Answer very specifically that what do you infer from
it. Do you really get some surprising result?

[3] Recall the learnings that what do you understand by surface and volume integrals? First redo the
solved problems 1.7 and 1.8 of Griffiths by your own putting all intermediate steps in the
calculation.

[4] Recall the learnings that what do you understand by Gauss Divergence Theorem? First redo the
solved problem 1.10 by your own putting all intermediate steps in the calculation. Thereafter, solve
the problem 1.32.

[5] A 3-D slab is defined by (x,y,z)=[(0,0,0), (2m,2m,10m)]. The electric field vectors are passing
through this slab, and this vector field is defined as E = (x2yz)i + (y2xz)j + (z2xy)k. Find the total flux
enclosed with the slab. [Hint : Use Gauss Divergence Theorem].

[6] Find out the total electric flux from a cube 0 < x, y, z ≤ 1 m, containing volume charge density ρ =
16 x y z micro Coulomb m−3 and ǫ =8.86×10−12 C2/N .M2.

[7] A cube of 2 m side is centred at the origin with the edges parallel to the axes. Within the cube E =
10 x3 i in SI units. What will be the total charge contained in the cube. ǫ =8.86×10 −12 C2/N .M2
