Right Brain
Education Manual
What Parents need to know!
“Children grow and mature faster than parents think. The human
brain rapidly starts developing soon after both.”
________ Professor Makoto Shichida
Introduction
There are so many right brain schools opening everywhere around Japan, Hong
Kong, China, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia,
Indonesia, India, Cambodia, Australia, United States, Canada, Kuwait, Romania, and
others.
You may just wonder, which is the right school for your child?
What do they teach?
How can I teach my child at home or online?
What are the right brain activities for babies and toddlers?
The e-book is intended to give you an understanding of what is right brain education,
why is right brain education important, what flashcards and materials used and how
you can teach your child.
This is a compilation of notes and comments taken from schools, teachers, and
students from the leading right brain education schools.
You will get information on what you need to know and how you as a parent can
teach your child.
The success of your child in “right brain” education depends very much on your
effort to teach your child.
So you are sure to get “real” and practical information you need and not some “fancy
sales letters” that are trying to sell you something.
So with that said, I hope this e-book will enlighten you and answers most of the
questions you are looking for.
Yours truly,
Right Brain Education Library Team
What Is Right Brain Education?
Right brain education is about developing children to have more sensitivity,
imagination, and creativity, other than academic achievements alone. Its
education principles are based upon the sense of one-ness, cooperation, and
love.
As for the left brain-centered education, it focuses on confrontation and
competition.
According to Professor Shichida (founder of the "Shichida Method"), every
child between the ages of zero to three years old is believed to be a
genius. This is because the child is able to absorb or accept information at an
amazing rate.
When you want to raise your children differently and effectively, you must
understand how the infant's brain works between ages zero to three years old.
The right brain functions at a high speed, whereas the left brain function at a low
speed. Both sides of the brain function very differently. So when you input a lot of
information at a very fast speed that is when you activate the right brain.
In Shichida classes, flash cards are not only used as tools. There are other activities
such as ESP games, image eye play, eye exercises, mandala, peg memory, picture
flash cards, singing and dancing, story books, playing cards, and others are used.
Right Brain Schools
There are many “right brain education” schools opening up everywhere. The three
pioneer and most established right brain schools are Glenn Doman, Shichida
Method, and Heguru.
Glenn Doman was one of the first to recognized that showing flashcard fast is an
effective method to teach for babies and toddlers. He is the founder of The Institutes
for the Achievement of Human Potential and began pioneering the field of child
brain development since 1940.
He and the institute are known for their pioneering work with brain-injured children
and their early development for well children.
Glenn has authored a lot of books and materials that show parents how to tutor their
babies at home.
Shichida Method schools were founded in Oct 1978 in Japan and are also in Hong
Kong, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand,
Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Australia, United States, Canada, and United Kingdom.
Classes that are conducted by them are for the age of four months to six years.
Heguru schools or HEGL Inc. was founded in July 1989 in Japan. They are at the
moment in Japan, Singapore, Thailand, China, Kuwait, Australia, Malaysia,
Indonesia, India (Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore), Hong Kong, Taiwan, Dubai, and
Myanmar.
In July 1997, Heguru founded the “Undulate Speed Reading” or “Wave Speed
Reading”. You can send your child to this school from the age of four months to
twelve years.

The Science Behind Right Brain Education
"What is the science behind the Shichida or Heguru flashcards right brain education
theories? So that I fully understand how to apply with my son."
One of the pioneers and most well-known educators that develops this method is
the Shichida Method from Japan.
Most of the education curriculum in Japan is "left brain" method, which utilises a
more left-brain, linear approach to learning.
Dr Makoto Shichida believes that both the right and left side of the brain needs to
work together, which he calls hemispheric synchronisation.
Which means "the right and left side of the brain connected and working together".
Dr Makoto Shichida's method is also known as "right brain education". He uses this
term to differentiate his approach from the rest of the traditional method.
At the age of 0 to 3 years old the child's right brain is the most dominant. This is
when you start the right brain training. From 4 years old, the left brain (the logic
brain) begins to develop.
At the age of 4 years old the right and left brain training are done.
What is Shichida Method Philosophy?
He believes the love between the parent and child must be present
before any whole-brain training can be effective. The right brain functions are
activated through the love of the parent and child.
The traditional education approach is more concerned with academic scores.
Shichida's method promotes a parenting style that understands the child's mind; It is
a parenting style that can develop the capabilities of the right brain.
Right brain education works through "Love, Mind, and Brain".
Love = encouragement, affirmation, providing a sense of assurance, and praises.
Through love, the child's mind will be more open or motivated to learn.
With an open and positive mind, the "brain" will work positively.
This means, your child will learn effectively.
What is the Shichida Method's "whole-brain learning" program?
Shichida promotes whole-brain education.
This is done by,
1. Developing the right brain (right brain education) and
2. Connecting the right brain with the left brain.
This allows the right and left brain to work together in balance.
Here are 4 ways to develop the right brain?
We input a large number of facts - This can be done via flashcards (math,
language, picture, and others).
Stimulate the right brain senses - This is to develop the "mental image ability"
of the child. For example, you can use flashcards and Mandala exercises to
stimulate the sight and hearing senses and develop image ability.
Rhythm and speed - This is the most important in the Shichida method. The
focus is on fast response and thinking power and also the ability to receive and
memorise images instantaneously. Flash cards are one of the primary
materials used.
The left brain and right brain learn and operate differently.
The left brain operates at the Beta wave frequency (14-30 hertz/second) and
the right brain at the Alpha wave frequency (8-13 hertz/second). Alpha state is
associate at a relaxed state of mind.
Dr. Makoto Shichida teaches that relaxation and deep breathing
are needed for the Right Brain to operate.
Every right brain lessons, whether in class or at home,
breathing exercises are done before lessons begin.
Traditional Method Vs Right Brain Education Method
Dr. Makoto Shichida believes that when every child born, their right-brain abilities are
present and active.
Based on his observation, during the age of 0 to 3 years old, every child has the
natural ability to learn. This is a period in which the child maximise the use of the
right brain.
It is the period where exposing as much knowledge at high speed is essential,
especially when the right brain is dominant.
This is the period where their natural instinct to survive is present and where
knowledge is absorbed like a sponge during this tender age. This is the easiest and
best time to teach your child.
From 4 to 6 years old, the right brain begins to shift from right-brain to left-brain
dominance naturally.
At this age, parents' personal dedication and involvement are needed to show better
learning results.
By understanding the development and function of your child's brain, you will know
how to teach your child and why it is done that way.
The first 6 to 7 years of your child's development is the most important. These are
his foundation years. With a strong foundation, his learning years will be easier.
The flashcards and the right brain materials in the RightBrainEducationLibrary.Com
collection are designed to train and develop the right brain and also to connect the
left brain.
The Shichida Method recommends flashcards to be flashed at less than 1 second
to 0.5-seconds per card.
How To Teach Your Child?
Right brain education is not only about flashcards. The right brain method also
emphasises the importance of parenting.
Before you start teaching your child, the most important thing in right brain
education is the relationship between you and your child.
So, it is important how you view your child.
The child will grow according to they are being viewed or the image portrayed by
their parent or teacher.
For example, when a child makes a mistake, the parent should never think or say
words like “You are stupid” or “When this child grows up he/she will not be
successful” etc. The child will be what you think and say of him/her.
Don’t be a perfectionist
Now let's take a look at what is being taught in right brain schools and how you too
can teach your child right brain education at home.
Self Paced vs Scheduled Program
Before you start teaching your child, the most important thing in right brain
education is the relationship between you and your child.
"Self Paced Program" is active learning. It is about FUN, being creative, learning
at a personal pace, exploring and discovering. There is no pressure, no levels and
learning become a joy.
Learning is not based on an age-appropriate syllabus. It is based on the level of
competency. Learning has no limits and no boundaries.
"Scheduled Program" teaches the student to comply and consume rather than
having the initiative to learn. A set of rules, a daily schedule to follow and learning
materials are provided. The students are to strictly follow the program.
Especially kids at a very young age, we want them to love learning, have fun
learning, have initiative, learn to make their own decisions, and explore and discover
new knowledge.
Right brain education is about "what does my child likes to learn?" or "What is his
interest?" or "How to make his learning fun?".
Right brain training works only when your child is relaxed and is enjoying his
lessons.
When you teach your baby or toddler, make sure you have the volume and variety
of flashcards and right brain exercises to make the lessons engaging and fun.
On the other pages, you can look at the types of right brain learning materials you
can teach your child.
Alpha Music
The purpose of Alpha Music is to get your child into a state of relaxation mode. The
right brain functions best at the alpha wave, semiconscious, in a deep relaxed state.
There are a few ways you can get do that,
Taking a deep breath and “Make Energy Ball”. This method is used by Shichida
Method and/or
Alpha music is played as an instrumental background music for relaxation and it's
ideal to be played before or when your child is learning.
Energy Ball Exercise
I would also highly recommend that you do Shichida Method's “Make Energy
Ball” exercise to incorporate with music.
The “Energy Ball” exercise is to mentally prepare your child before you teach your
child.
The purpose of an energy ball is to get your child to focus their mental energy.
There are 2 videos you should take a look at.
The first video shows you how the energy ball exercise is done,
The video shows how the “Power of Intention” can do. Which is the same as what
the “Energy Ball” exercise can do.
Watch Spoon Bending "Power of Intention" on YouTube
It may not seem to have any logic doing this exercise, but bear in mind this exercise
is specially developed by Shichida.
It is compulsory that this exercise is done in Shichida classes.
Eye Training Exercise
It’s an exercise to train the eye muscles to scan up and down, left and right, and all
sorts of direction.
This is to prepare your child for photographic memory exercises and speed
reading.
For example, in (figure 1), you can use your finger to point or hold a little toy and
move according to the lines given and get your child to use his/her eyes to follow
your finger or toy.
Imaginary Play
The word “imaginary” means visualization or mental picture. The training is meant
to teach your child (at any age) to learn how to be imaginative or to create
images. This training is the foundation of all the other image exercises.
"Imaginary Play" are specially created stories where your child will close their eyes,
imagine and visualize the story when the story is being told. Your child will train his
right side of the brain by learning to mentally visualize the story.
"Imaginary Play" teaches your child to
1. Be creative.
2. Focus.
3. Learn to use their visual senses.
There are many other creative ways you can do these exercises, like getting your
child to visualize stories from story books as you read to them.
Right brain education teaches your child to see words, pictures, and numbers as
images.
Flashcards
In "Shichida Method" and "Heguru", they believe flashing cards to children is not
only to give knowledge to them but there are other purposes -
To activate the right brain
Cards need to be flashed at high speed. It is important because it gives your child
instant memory. Normally every child will learn with his left brain, but when
information is given at high speed, the right brain's memory is activated and it will
grow.
Make sure you have as much variety as possible. Do not repeat the same set of
cards in one sitting.
Just in case your child cannot sit through the session, you can take a short break
and then continue flashing.
Types of Flashcards
There are many types, you can consider to use, from science, phonics, vocabulary,
cultural, arts, countries, shapes and objects, dots, numerals, addition, multiplication,
speed reading, and many others.
Speed Reading and Photographic Memory training flash cards go back as far as the
late 1930s. This is possible with the invention of the tachistoscope.
You will notice the similarity of this right brain training method and theory with the
right brain education/training for babies and toddlers.
What is a tachistoscope?
It came from "Tachistos", which means very rapid, and "skopein" means a visual
instrument/screen that flashes images.
This device flashes a series of images on to a screen at a rapid speed to test visual
perception, memory, and learning. It uses a slide projector equipped with a
mechanical shutter system like a camera.
It is capable of projecting "flashcard" images as fast as 2 seconds to 0.01 seconds
per image.
Based on the Tachistoscope Principle training method, where accurate visual and
rapid speed is presented, the brain is able to recognize the image and is embedded
in the subconscious mind of the child. The child is then able to recall the
information from his subconscious mind and learning will be easy for the child.
Tachistoscopes were used during the late 1960s in public schools as an aid to
increased reading comprehension for speed reading.
There were two types: the student would look through a lens similar to an aircraft
bombsight viewfinder and read letters, words, and phrases using manually advanced
slide film. The second type of projected words and phrases on a screen in sequence.
Both types were followed up with comprehension and vocabulary testing.
When you teach your child using flash cards in right brain education, accuracy and
speed are vital.
Mandala Memory Program
This is a photographic memory exercise. The “Mandala” is translated as a “circle” in
the classical Indian language of Sanskrit.
It's not just a circle or a basic shape, but it means completeness, and can be seen as
a model for the organizational design of life--a universal chart that reminds us of our
connection to the infinite which spread out both beyond and within our bodies and
minds.
Mandala Memory Program is used as part of right brain education exercises by
Shichida Method, Heguru, and other right brain education schools.
These exercises are used as part of “Photographic Memory” exercises.
It is to help your child to remember the colors on the Mandala pictures when the
pictures are flashed within 5 seconds.
How to use the Mandala Memory Program?
First, what you need is two identical pictures of “Mandala”.
Ask your child to close his eyes and visualize what he saw.
Next, give your child the outlined Mandala picture and color pencils. Just ask
your child to draw a stroke of color in each area corresponding to the image he
captured.
It is important to PRACTICE many times in order to succeed.
You must flash fast, because the right brain takes in the entire image at a glance
and forms an 'after image' that the child sees when he closes his eyes.
This capability to see and retain the 'after image' will improve when practiced over
time.
In the beginning, your child may say "Mommy, I can't see anything!"
Be patient. According to Prof Shichida, the 'after image' will retain for 5 seconds or
less initially and gradually build up to 10 seconds or more.
When the 'after image' is retained into a child's mind for more than a minute, even
after seeing an object for only a second, he is said to have developed “Photographic
Memory”.
Tangram Memory Puzzles
Develop Photographic Memory Through Shapes and Colours.
This puzzle works on your child's photographic memory skills, fine motor skills, and
critical thinking. You are required to print the tangram and play this memory game
with your toddler.
Playing with tangrams help your child understanding shapes, develop positive
feelings about geometry, improve visual senses and photographic memory. It also
helps to develop an understanding of how geometric shapes can be decomposed,
hones spatial rotation skills, and acquire a precise vocabulary for manipulating
shapes (e.g., "flip," "rotate").
Linking Story
The purpose is to train the child to memorize a group of pictures in sequence.
For example, when your child looks at a chart full of pictures, in order to memorize,
he or she will take the first image and link to the other images with a story.
In this exercise, the story used to link the images does not make sense and has no
logic.
Since “the story” has no logic, the left side brain closes. This is because of the left
side brain functions based on logic.
For example, if the first picture is a “cow” and the second is “car”. The story could
begin with:
The whole idea is to get your child to look at pictures or images as fast as possible in
color, photos, number of objects, and others at a glance.
Next, your child is supposed to identify the differences of the pictures or objects,
which could be the color, position of the object, and others
This is to train your child’s right brain and to learn how to memorize in the form of
an image of what he or she has seen at a glance.
There are a few types of photographic exercises -
Quantity Memory – to determine the number of objects seen
Space Memory – to remember the position of the object being placed on a grid
or without a grid
The exercises mentioned above are the numerous variation used in order to keep
the exercises interesting to your child.
Photo Image Exercise
This is a photographic memory exercise. Is a form of training where your child is
trained in their brain’s ability to capture and hold an image in the mind.
For example, you can take an orange colored card with a blue circle, triangle or
square. And get your child to stare at the card for about 30 seconds, then look at a
white sheet of paper.
To Glenn Doman, these flashcards got to meet the specific requirement for it to be
called “bits of intelligence”.
Discreet - This means the flashcard should show one item or one subject. For
example, if the word on the card says “Bald eagle”, the picture should be an
eagle.
Clear - It must not have a background that confuses the “one item/one
subject”.
Unambiguous - The word on the flashcard describing the one item or one
subject has to be specific or precise. For example, “Bald eagle” or “Haliaeetus
Leucocephalus” instead of just “eagle”.
New - Always show new flashcard pictures. Something new to your child. Don’t
bore your child with the same flashcards.
Do make sure you get flashcards that meet Glenn Doman’s “bits of intelligence”
requirements.
Right Brain Education Library meets to both Glenn Doman and also The Shichida
Method requirements.
Here is an example of “Bits of Intelligence” Flash Cards
Pic. 1 Pic. 2
If you say this is Pic. 1 is “fries”, it is incorrect and not precise. It does not meet the
requirement of Glenn Doman’s “bits of information”. It is a picture of “burger and
fries”.
It is also not discrete. The picture does not show “one item”, which is supposed to be
only “fries”.
It is also very ambiguous. A child would believe Pic. 1 is “fries”.
However, if Pic. 1 is called “burger and fries”, then it is precise and discrete because
it shows “one subject” and also unambiguous.
Pic. 2 meets the “bits of intelligence” if you say it is “fries” because it is precise,
discrete and unambiguous.
