Church Outreach Strategy Guide

This document outlines a sample outreach strategy for a church plant. It includes conducting research on the local community which revealed 14% of children suffer from food insecurity. The strategy focuses outreach efforts on partnering with existing organizations addressing food insecurity. Events are planned with, in, and for the community from May to September prior to the church's launch, including block parties, cleanups, and classes. Progress will be evaluated through debrief surveys. The goal is to introduce people to the church and Jesus through consistent, community-focused outreach.

Why Outreach?
Jesus was sent. As His followers, He sends us. However, human nature drives us to huddle up and
isolate. We will be good news to our community by being intentionally outward-focused and active
outside of our ‘walls’.

Our Community
We want to be good news to our community, so we need to understand the hopes, fears, wants, needs
and brokenness of our neighborhoods.
Here’s how we go about learning about our community:
We start with demographics research, like the free demographics report from Passion for
Planting.
Then we created a Networking Strategy to start meeting with community leaders and
influencers to learn about the real needs of our community.
We will also conduct an informal Community Needs & Assets Survey at our booth at the
Johnsonville Brat Days, encouraging every passer by to complete the survey.
Here’s the summary of what we have learned about our community:
We discovered that 14% of the children in Sheboygan County suffer from food insecurity - they
don't always know where their next meal is coming from.
Here is a map of the boundaries where we focus the majority of our time & attention:

Our Approach
We want outreach to be woven into the fabric of everything we do, not to become a program relegated
to just a few people.
We want there to be a more than average number of events before Launch Sunday, but we also don’t
want outreach to fade away and disappear after we launch our worship gatherings. We’re in this for the
long haul.
Because we want to keep a consistent theme and concentrate our limited resources, we will focus our
outreach efforts prior to Launch Sunday on: childhood food insecurity

With Our Community

Some of our outreach will be focused on partnering with the good that’s already being done in our
community.
Here are the organizations (or kinds or organizations) that we will partner with:
• Generosity Feeds
• Sheboygan County Food Bank
• Meals on Wheels of Sheboygan County
Here are the events already happening in our community that we can join:
Date Event Venue
Aug 2 Johnsonville Brat Days Kiwanis park
Hmong Sheboygan Summer Festival

In Our Community
Some of our outreach will be focused on providing fun activities to build trust, create community and
provide invitation opportunities for our team.
Here are the kinds of large-scale events we will put on:
• Generosity Feeds meal packaging event

Here are the kinds of smaller-scale events we encourage our small groups and team members to host:
• Neighborhood block party

For Our Community
Some of our outreach will be focused on community service and meeting real needs around us.
Here are the kinds of service projects we will initiate:
• Community park cleanup

We commit to participating in our first outreach event in the month of: May
Prior to Launch Sunday, we will host or participate in this many large-scale events: Two (2)
Including those, we will host or participate in this many events each month: Two (2)

Debriefing Events
It is important for us to establish a “lessons learned” culture early in the life of our church. Here’s how
we’ll debrief every event that we participate in:
At our Launch Team meetings, we will take 5 minutes for everyone to fill out an event debrief
survey. Those answers will be reviewed by the event planners and decisions made about what
to add, remove or clarify for the next event.
