MIDTERM EXAM IN RIPH

QUESTION AND ANSWER

1. We were taught that it was Lapu -Lapu , the first Filipino hero ta have killed a foreign occupier . Who really
killed Magellan according to Pigafetta’s account?

Pigafetta claimed that several locals, likely battle-hardened as shown by their proficiency with spears and
particularly massive bolos, killed Ferdinand Magellan rather than Lapu-Lapu. He was killed by a poison arrow
during a skirmish on the island of Mactan in what is now the Philippines.Magellan and his crew had no idea
this would happen.

2. What were the customs of the Tagalogs , on account of de Placecia’s work

a.) did not perpetuate until today

•Many customs from de Plasencia's work in Tagalog haven't survived up to this moment. In the
twenty-first century, neither did the Philippines have a form of government headed by a dato, nor did the
three castes of nobles, commoners, and slaves exist.

b.) aspects of our culture that were existing prior to hispanization which had survive until today

•Several of the pre-colonial Filipino traditions and practices mentioned in the text are still followed
today. This is a result of the pre-colonial riches in natural resources that the Philippines possessed, including
rice, herbs, eggs, meat, and other poultry products up to the present. Bartering and the exchange of goods
were once commonplace. The principal crops were rice, sugarcane, and coconuts. Filipinos frequently served
as housemaids, fisherman, or farmers for wealthy Filipinos. Although Catholicism was only present in Filipino
cultures, beliefs, and customs, it was already growing. Prior to the Spanish conquest, we were already
literate; we could read and write, and our ancestors had produced epics, tales, poems, and other literary
works.

•The values identified in kartilya ng katipunan are rectitude, honor, and self-sacrifice; behavior,
faith in God, service to country, fellowmen, and family; equality, fairness, and justice; and respect for
women. The Kartilya was about the thirteen lessons that serve as the Katipuneros’ guide to living with
morals and good values. It was like a code of conduct that shows how to be a true Filipino in words and
action. I believe that this Kartilya ng Katipuan shows the path on how to live a meaningful life for every
Filipino. Each lesson is unique in such a way that it tackles different aspects of a person’s life. Many of us
may have different explanations and understandings of it, but it is appropriate to have a better
understanding. And as a college student, I must have a purpose-driven life. I must know how to set my goals
and find meaning in my life, because without knowing my purpose, I can say that I will suffer from unwanted
situations and a chaotic existence. I must do good deeds not to earn praises but to show them with my
whole heart because a deed done only for fame is not worthy of being called good. I will just go with the
flow of what I achieve in life. I must do good deeds not to earn praises but to show them with my whole
heart because a deed done only for fame is not worthy of being called good. I will just go with the flow of
what I achieve in life. by doing good, being kind, and helping the fellowmen without asking anything in
return. We are all born equal, no matter what race, status, or educational background we have. Our society
may have divided us into groups, which is why I must understand and respect all of them, because no one is
superior to anyone else's. I must understand that honoring oneself also means he or she values honor over
personal interest. I must do things that I promised because I can never take back what I have said. I must
treasure the time spent doing what makes me happy and focusing on my goals in life because I can never get
it back if I don't treasure the time. At the end, I might end up regretting the things I wasn’t able to do. I have
to use my time wisely. Actually, I don’t have the same strengths as you, but we can help one another. I must
choose to fight for what is right: fight with the weak people who need your help and comfort, and fight
those people who keep on putting others down by oppressing them. If someone tells me a secret, I will keep
it if it needs to be kept. They can trust us as always. I can be a model for everyone, even though, in the
simplest way, I am a woman. I want to lead and be a role model to the teenagers; I want to show them what
the society needs. I want to be true to myself and to others by showing them the right path of
righteousness.

Bundok Tala, acting on Emilio Aguinaldo's orders. Lazaro Macapagal was a lieutenant colonel in the
Philippine Revolution.
