Pythagoras was a Greek Philosopher who was born in Samos, lonia, Greece and who lived
from 570 BCE until approx. 495 BCE. His teachings emphasized the immortality and
transmigration of the soul, also known as, reincarnation, However, he is most commonly
known in modern day society for the discovery of the Pythagorean Theorem. Although, his
knowledge was obtained through Babylonian texts written by ancient writers many years
before Pythagoras’ time, which detailed the same formula.

Pythagoras found most difficulty in his discussions with others. He found trouble in
attempting to separate the person with whom he was speaking and his teachings from the
mythology which surrounded him daily. Many considered Pythagoras to be overrated or just
another contemporary/sceptic, due to his ‘backwards’ beliefs, as interpreted at the time. Due
to the fact that reincarnation was an unheard of concept during his lifetime. Xenophanes of
Colophon even mocked Pythagoras for his belief in reincarnation.
