HCIN 548: Seminar

Professor O’Hagan

April Seminar Reflection

Today’s seminar showcased the importance of community in our graduate school

journey. By relying on our peers for empowerment and accountability, we are able to create a

strong sense of community in our cohort and work towards finishing the semester strong. We

were inspired by the student presenting their capstone project and reflected on the ways in

which we all faced adversities to get to the point where we are today.

In addition, we learned technical skills we will be able to apply to our careers in

Healthcare Informatics and Data Analytics. Professor Fred Cheug, a USD Alum from the Health

Care Informatics Program, walked us through the process of creating a Weebly account and

emphasized the importance of maintaining our course projects in the website. He also advised

us on ways we can grow our understanding for data analytics and learn skills that may be

desirable from healthcare organizations looking to hire informatics professionals. Professional

development trainings and courses on LinkedIn are a great ways to connect us with like minded

individuals and make us standout from other new graduates.

As a first-generation college students, I soak all the remarks and advice in as I plan my

academic career and search for internship opportunities. During the summer, I hope to improve

my skills in SQL, Python and take more classes on LinkedIn to prepare myself for employment

when next May 2023 rolls around. I agree with Professor Cheug that there is a lot of growth that

can be done if we learn the technical skills and continuously choose to challenge ourselves. In

addition, I will be starting my practicum at Rady Children’s this June 2022 and hope that gives

me more insight and knowledge on the skills Professor Cheung discussed in class.
