understanding a culture and in preparation for the next unit, try to answer the following questions:

1. Does the statement “The Philippines is cheap” possibly miscommunicate a message? How?
Yes, based on the attached video, the statement “The Philippines is cheap” can miscommunicates
the message. In fact, when I first read it without watching the related video, I had negative reactions to it
because it seems to me that the Philippines, my home country, was being belittled simply by this
statement. Hence, the reason why it can miscommunicate the message is that the context of the statement
is not provided and/or understood by the readers and listeners.

2. How is cultural relativism observed/ evident in the video?

The video exemplifies cultural relativism by emphasizing both the good and the bad aspects of
the Philippines, thereby promoting cultural understanding of the country. It allows viewers all over the
world to connect with the culture of the Philippines, including their moral norms and values, which may
differ from their own. It promotes appreciation for the Filipino way of life, as well as calls for unity to
help and be kind to those who are less fortunate.
