OVERVIEW FUNCTION:

Perform phlebotomy, and collection/ processing of other types of specimen.


Perform basic, non-complex and non-specialized laboratory testing in areas of the clinical laboratory
such as Microbiology, Hematology, Blood Bank, and/or Clinical Chemistry.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


 Perform phlebotomy by adhering to standard procedure of blood collection.
 Perform collection of body fluid specimens, swab, and other types of specimens utilized for testing
in the laboratory.
 Perform non-specialized tests in assigned area of the laboratory.
 Perform sample preparation, processing, packaging and transfer/transport in compliance with the
standards and quality plan/document of the laboratory.
 Evaluate specimen adequacy and integrity for test performance.
 Analyze technical problems pertaining to specimen adequacy, integrity, determine cause and
rectifies problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures.
 Perform, evaluate, and document quality control data in compliance with the quality
plan/document of the department.
 Perform testing on proficiency testing samples.
 Perform instrumentation troubleshooting to correct problems; refer problems appropriately to
instrument vendors.
 Prepare reagents and solutions in accordance with established guidelines.
 Assist with inventory management of supplies and assure that laboratory areas remain stocked
with needed supplies.
 Respond to customer inquiries about laboratory results.
 Participate in in-service education programs.
 Participate in the preparation for all inspections by accrediting agencies.
 Participate in training of new employees, interns, residents, and students.
 Maintain confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
 Adhere to customer service standards of hospital and department.
 Perform other job-related duties as assigned; Omission of specific duties does not preclude
assignment of duties that are logically related to the position.

REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:


 Medical Laboratory Technician Qualification and certification by MLSCN or equivalent
certification.
 1 -3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
 Knowledge of Microsoft Office. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and experience in use Electronic
Medical Records (EMR) is desirable.
 Strong interpersonal skills.
 Ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment where constant interruptions occur
 Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach beyond arm’s length, and type (finger dexterity) for extended
periods of time.
