IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
ARGUMENT
In recent years, especially in 2021, Serbia has achieved major progress in
particular in the renewable energy and the energy efficiency sectors by the
adoption of new laws. However, Serbia’s electricity production mostly relies
on coal (70%) and, to a lesser extent, hydropower (20%). A lot remains to
be done in order to strengthen the interconnection both in the power and
natural gas sectors.
Based on free trade agreements (EU, CEFTA, EFTA, Russia, Turkey), Serbia
can export its products on all the neighboring markets; thus, its exports
more than doubled during the last 10 years. Majority of FDI went into
automotive industry, food and beverage industry, machinery, textile and
clothing, with names such as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Bosch, Michelin,
Siemens (wind turbines), Panasonic (lighting devices), Continental,
Schneider Electric, Philip Morris, LafargeHolcim, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola,
Carlsberg, Gorenje, Hesteel being present and operating in Serbia.
The energy sector is one of the largest and most important sectors to the
country’s economy and Serbia is a net exporter of electricity and importer
of key fuels (such as oil and gas).
In order to capitalize on the future trends in the region – green economies
for sustainable societies, based on decarbonization, digitalization,
renewables – all countries must work harder on incentivizing the creation of
complete industrial value chains in the region, no matter the borders.
