Name, explain, and cite (Tilley, Page #) two (2) out of the four (4)

major misunderstandings of
faith presented by Tilley in this chapter. Use your own words.
i. Reduces faith to believing things
ii. Equates having faith with behaving morally
iii. Reduces faith to something that we feel deep into our souls
iv. Misunderstands having faith with being religious
In defining the word "faith," do you hold any of the "misunderstandings" of faith presented in Tilley's
chapter?

o If so, were you convinced by Tilley’s arguments against your "misunderstanding"? Why or why
not?
o If not, explain how your understanding of faith is different than the misunderstandings described
in the chapter.

The first major understanding I will be discussing is the

fourth misunderstandings of faith which is “misunderstanding having faith with

being religious.” It is perceived that if you don’t demonstrate religious faith then

that means you have no faith witch is untrue. Many scientists have faith in their

ideas or concepts. There are types of humanist that have faith in

science. Religion ≠ Faith. Humanists have faith in humanity and

theists refer to god as the final point, no matter what. The issue between theists vs

scientific materialists involves them the problem is deciding which

the world or god is the final point when it in the end is unsolvable

(Tilley, 19-22).

The second misunderstanding I have elected to explain is the

first misunderstanding which is” Reduces faith to believe things.” I selected this

one because I agreed that faith involves a risk with your life. No matter what

direction you choose to take, whether it be to go the religious way or the atheist

route, you won’t know if you took the right path until it’s too late. It was explained

using to examples about having blind faith in someone. They are varied as you

have faith in someone.  One person because they possess a vaster knowledge on

the subject of choice while the other has no information. The way they explain this

difference is there was independent support because she is more knowing in that

subject matter so it is more realistic to believe in her. Tilley describes blind faith as

an irrational risk. (Tilley, 5)

2.I held a few of the misunderstandings as I thought that to have faith

you have to be religious. I get now that there are many other ways to have faith

that aren’t necessarily paired with religion. For example, the humanists point

of view as he said” Humanists have faith in society. They believe in that which is

deepest and best in all of us” or in another type of humanist ,” Secular

humanism is a form of faith—faith in the fundamental goodness

of humanity.” (Tilley,

20). I accepted the idea that hope and faith went hand in hand, when

as he conveys it, it is actually far from that. He goes on to explain how

while hope and faith can be grouped together very closely they do not equal each

other. An example he uses to differentiate them is that hope is consistently about

the future, while faith isn’t. You don’t have faith that you are going to do well on

an exam, you hope you do well on a test. (Tilley, 16).

The issue between theists vs scientific materialists involves them

the problem is deciding which the world or god is the final point when it in

the end is unsolvable
