The overall effect of the writer is to denote that the bookstore was not a normal one, and rather mystical.
The writer describes the bookstore by saying that the place was “absurdly narrow and dizzyingly tall”.
This means that the place has a lack of space and was very elevated. The writer tries to show that the
bookstore was different from other bookstores by using extreme adjectives, it is also difficult to navigate
it. The phrase connotes the idea of claustrophobia and that the bookstore is undernourished, and not doing
well, creating an effect of lightheadedness, and annoyance. Further, the writer describes the shelves to be
“full of wolves, witches, and dagger-wielding bandits” suggesting that the shelves are full of these
mythical creatures, implying that the place is spooky and dark along with being childish. It connotes the
idea of the writer being in a place full of childish fairytales and myths with the bookstore being unusual,
creating hyperbole. This creates an effect of terror and horror. Moreover, the writer ends by saying that
the ladders stretched into the “gloom”. This literally means that the ladders were sad. Use of the word
gloom is used to represent that the place was dark and whoever entered the place, lost their spirits. It
connotes that the people that came in there, lost all their hope and aspirations. This creates an effect of
darkness and melancholy.
