Circular economy

The circular economy is an economic system, which involves sharing, reusing,

repairing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way,
the life cycle of products is extended.
● Linear economy approach cause waste generation at all stages of a product life
cycle right from resource extraction, processing, value addition, consumption to
end of life stage

Circular economy is based on three principles:

● Designing products to reduce waste and pollution during production and use.
● Keep products and materials in use
● Regenerate natural systems
Why do we need a Circular Economy
● Rise in Population: Higher demand for goods and services to leading to depletion
of reserves
● The supply of crucial raw materials is limited.
● rising household demands causing increased pressure on natural resources such
as land, forests, air, water, and ecosystems.
Benefits of a Circular Economy
● The United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) says that
India could create as much as 600+ billion by 2050, by adopting circular
principles across only three areas: cities and construction, food and agriculture,
and mobility and vehicle manufacturing.
Circular economy in greywater reuse

Greywater is the used water from your bathroom and kitchen sinks, showers, tubs, and
washing machines. It is not water that has come into contact with feces, either from the
toilet or from washing diapers.

Greywater may look “dirty,” but it is safe and even beneficial source of irrigation water in
a yard.Greywater is released into rivers, lakes, or estuaries, its nutrients become
pollutants, but to plants, they are valuable fertilizer. The easiest way to use greywater is
to pipe it directly outside and use it to water ornamental plants or fruit trees.

Soak Pits for water table recharging

A soak pit is a covered, porous-walled chamber that allows water to slowly soak into the
ground. A soak pit can be attached to the greywater and rainwater collection system. In
a long course of time the water drains into the ground through these soak pits elevating
the ground water table .
“SUJALAM” Grey Water Recycling Project( by Ministry of Jal Shakti)

● The campaign focus on the creation of institutional level

greywater management and recycling system in Panchayat
Ghar, hospitals, schools, community centres and other
government institutions.
● Household greywater systems are encouraged.
● More than 1 million soak pits were built at household and
community level across the country.

Water footprint
A water footprint is an environmental indicator that measures the amount of
freshwater used in consumption as well as production .

India has the largest water footprint in the world. The main reasons are

1. Excessive agriculture water consumption due to illiteracy , easy access

and minimal rates of irrigation water charges.
2. Poor water management infrastructure.
3. Very low circular economy idea implementation .

Why Is Water Footprinting Important?

1. Keep data of water usage in various domains

2. Indicate the water overconsumption levels in society and industry
3. Traces the water wastage sources and causes around us
4. Link our daily consumption of goods and the problems of water depletion and
pollution
