History
• The history of tie-dyed shirts dates back to ancient China.
• It most popular in Asian countries like Japan and Indonesia.
• In the United States, these shirts didn't begin appearing until the 1920s,
but they still exist today in different forms.
• Traditional methods of tie-dye were formed in India, Japan and Africa as
early as the sixth century.
• The oldest recorded tie-dye tradition that is still practiced is an Indian
method called Bandhani.
• Another form of tie-dye is Shabori, a method that is very similar to
modern tie-dye.
• Tie-dye, long before the 70's, was known as Shibori, which have been
utilized by different cultures for over 6000 years.
• Shibori includes a form of tie-dye that originated in Japan and Indonesia.
It has been practiced there since at least the 8th century.
•The Japanese used primarily indigo to dye their clothes, which were
usually made of silk or hemp.
• In the 1960s, tie-dye was brought to America through the hippie
movement, a youth movement that supported the sexual revolution,
psychedelic rock and protested the Vietnam War.

• Phillip Brown Designs has been creating some of the world’s

• He creates colorful patterns on t-shirts, tapestries and bedsheets

your day!
• Working out of his shop in Rosendale, NY Phil also, supplies
many of the best t-shirt artists with blank tie-dyed t-shirts for
silkscreen printing.
• He started out drawing and printing on T-shirts and paper and
selling these works at Openings and Shows.

His Work
Tie Dye Mary
• Started over 37 years ago, Tie Dye Mary is Nashville's world-famous tie
dye artist.
• Originally from Rochester, New York, Mary Patricia Deprez (Tie Dye
Mary) moved to Middle Tennessee in 1972.
• Already a Certified Nursing Assistant and graphic artist, in 1979 she began
to study the bound resist art medium on The Farm in Summertown,
Tennessee.
• She moved to Nashville soon after and became a master baker (at The
Grateful Breadbox Bakery), where after long hours of baking she continued
to practice the bound resist medium intensively.
• It was during this time that Mary's study and practice of tie-dye art
intensified, and her reputation as a fabric artist was established.
• Tie Dye Mary is known internationally for her expertise and precision, her
colors are brilliant and permanent; patterns consistent and intricate; whites
are clear and shirts are preshrunk 100% cotton.
• Mary's creations have been seen everywhere from the broad shoulders of
famous musicians to the steps of the White House.
