6
The 1920’s

Clothing of this era was a fingers up to the decades prior.

Women no longer wore binding undergarments such as

corsets, and showed more skin than ever before. They adopted
shorter hemlines, dropped waists and looser styles.
Hats and headpieces were often worn, and beading and
sequins were common for party wear.

7
The 1930’s
After partying it up in the 20’s, the 30’s saw a return
to modesty.

Women returned to more modern roots, lowered

hemlines and took more care in their silhouette with
more fitted shapes. They often wore dresses with
gloves, hats and matching shoes.

Embellishments were used less often, but jewelry

increased with brooches and necklaces.

8
The 1940’s

During the 40’s many women took up work in factories

to support the war efforts and took on jobs originally
performed by men. This heavily influenced fashion.

Because of this, the 40’s saw the increase of women

wearing more masculine inspired clothing, including 2
piece suits and at times, pants.

9
The 1950’s
After the war, when men returned and took back their
jobs, most women (not all!) returned to the home, and
fashion followed them. The concept of the “Perfect
Family” saw women in much more flattering silhouettes,
fitted waists and circle skirts with petticoats to make their
waists appear even slimmer. These often had matching
cardigans.

There was also the rocker/ greaser aesthetic, which saw

women in tight fitted pants called cigarette pants in a
more youthful, risque style.

10
The 1960’s
The 1960’s was a time of muich political
change, and experimentation in the world of
fashion. Hair was big, makeup was bold and so
were their clothes.

Short hemlines, bold colours, and striking use of

pattern was common. The 60’s, like the 20’s,
saw a return to the shift dress, which was more
rectangular in silhouette.

11
The 1970’s

Protest and experimentation continued, until disco hit.

This decade had multiple styles, with menswear like vests and
pants more common, and pants became much less fitted and
the flared style pant was pushed to it’s limits – the more flared
the better.

12
The 1980’s

Clothing in the 1980’s was largely inspired by music and the

variety of genres is as wide as the variety of fashion.

Some common aspects included: layers, accessories bright

colours, and really pushed people to show off their
personality.
