at Seminar hall there has been a talk for
Engineering Seminar subject that been
given by En Kamal Hisham Kamaruddin
about “Understanding internet”. He gave us
the view about the internet that he’s works
on for the past years’ experience.
The internet is made up of ISPs of
various sizes and types. Some access
providers have local coverage. Others
might give regional or country-specific
coverage, while others are worldwide in
scope. These ISPs network their operations.
They do not link with every other ISP
throughout 71200 unique independent
networks, and they connect based on
practical and business considerations. Some
Internet service providers (ISPs) provide
transit to others. They connect other ISP
networks, and around ten thousand
autonomous networks provide transit to
another AS.
Then he discusses peeking and transit.
Transit transports traffic over a network for
a price. For instance, an access provider
may link to a regional provider. Peering is
the exchange of routing information and
traffic for no charge. Settlement free
peering is another term for it. A regional
provider, for example, connects to another
meet in a neutral area and join their
networks, this is referred to as a public
interconnect. For instance, private peering,
settlement free peering, no traffic fee, the
most popular type of peering, and peering.
Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) is
Malaysia's first neutral Internet Exchange
('IX') where local Internet Service
Providers ('ISP's) and others may exchange
local internet traffic. SKMM successfully
constructed the Malaysia internet exchange,
MyIX, which comprises of three main sites,
in December 2006. They now have 47
regular members, 41 associate members,
and 53 peering partners, for a total of 131
peers.
There are several advantages to
internet exchanges, including the ability to
keep internal traffic inside a country or area
without requiring indirect international
connections. Next, 20 to 30 percent of
traffic is often domestic. It can also
minimise badwith costs while improving
throughput and latency performance.

MyIX provides immediate savings
of roughly RM2.36 billion in foreign
exchange over a 5-year period. If ISPs route
their traffic through MyIX, they may save
between 8 and 15% of their operational
costs.
