especially in South India. The name of one of the South Indian states, Kerala, comes from coconut
(Kera means coconut in Malayalam language).
India is one of the top exporters of coconuts, accounting for around 34% of global output in the years
2020–21. The crop provides around Rs. 307,498,000,000 (US$3.88 billion) to the nation's GDP
(GDP). For more than 12 million people in India, the coconut palm offers prospects for both food
security and a living. Additionally, it is a crop that produces fibre for more than 15,000 coir-based
businesses, which employ close to 6 lakh people. One of the highest in the world, the national coconut
productivity for 2020–21 was 9,687 nuts per hectare. The nation's traditional coconut-based
operations include the processing of copra, the extraction of coconut oil, and the production of coir.
Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh account for the majority of India's coconut
output, which comprises 90.04% of the nation's production and 89.13% of its land area. Gujarat, West
Bengal, and Orissa are some of the other states in the nation that grow coconuts.

More than 140 nations throughout the world are recipients of Indian coconut exports. UAE,
Afghanistan, USA and Iran are the top importers of coconut from India. United Arab Emirates (US$
14 million), Afghanistan (US$ 6.5 Million), Malaysia (US$ 4.1 Million), Iran (US$3.4 Million) and
United Kingdom (US$ 2.5 million) would receive the majority (68%) of India's exports of coconuts in
2020–21.
PRODUCTION
In terms of global production, India ranks 2 nd in the world in terms of coconut production worldwide.
In 2020, India produced 14.7 million metric tons of coconuts. Only Indonesia produced more
coconuts, with a production volume of 16.82 million metric tons in the year 2020. Third is
Philippines, they producing around 14.49 million metric tons of coconut in each year. These three
producing 82% of total world coconut.
Cochin sea port handles a majority of the exports of fresh coconuts that takes place from India,
followed by Tuticorin sea port and Bangalore air cargo port.
CONSUMPTION PATTERNS
Domestic
According to ibef.org, production of coconuts in India was valued at $3.88 billion for the year 2020-
21. In the same year, exports of coconuts from India were valued at $58.4 million as per data. That is
only 1.5% of total coconut exporting, remaining all 98.5% consumed domestically. Domestically India
consumes around 9.8 Kgs of coconut per year.
International
In terms of consumption per capita, India ranks 13 th in the world in terms of coconut consumption
per capita. The average Indian consumes around 7kgs of coconuts per year. Sri Lanka has the highest
coconut consumption per capita in the world, with the average Sri Lankan consuming 61.9 kgs of
coconuts per year. On the other end of the spectrum, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gambia and Tunisia
make up the bottom three countries in terms of consumption of coconut per capita, with each
country averaging 0.010 kgs per capita.
