Community Awareness during
Natural Disasters:Earthquakes

“What the freck are Earthquakes?”You might have had this question in your head
so I’m here to answer you!
An earthquake or also known as quakes,tremors(NO NOT THE MOVIE!) and tremblors is the
earth’s surface shaking due to a sudden release of energy from the planet’s lithosphere(will
explain later!) that creates seismic waves! Earthquakes vary in size,magnitude and destruction that
it can cause from quakes so pathetically weak it’s kinda insult other quakes before or after it to
call it a quake as ya can’t even feel it all the way to the other side of the spectrum and cause so
much frecking destruction it can cause a tsunami and destroy a nuclear power plant(please look
up Fukushima Japan to understand this reference!) the seismicity or seismic activity(if you’re a
simpleton who can’t say seismicity)of an area is the frequency,type and size of quakes over a
particular time period. The word tremor is also used for a non-earthquake type of rumbling on
the ground. At the earth’s surface quakes manifest themselves by shaking and displacing or
disrupting the ground. When the epicenter of an earthquake is found offshore….aka on water!
The seabed maybe displaced thus…TSUNAMI! No not Zombie Tsunami! Also they can also
trigger volcanic eruptions and landslides…..they be destructive.
“What the freck is that light-o-sphere thingymabob you said earlier?” Welp here!
Lightosphere which is compose of the Greek words for líthos which means rocky and sphaíra
which is sphere…..pretty explanatory….(I ain’t gonna try to use the ye olde Greek
Alphabet….only time I’d use that alphabet is if I’m trying to name the cool mechs in my
imagination like Einherjar α or Thrones λ)it is the rigid and outermost shell of a of planet or a
natural satellite. On Earth it is composed of the crust and the upper mantle that behaves
elastically…..every thousand years or so….The crust and upper mantle are distinguished on the
basis of chemistry and their mineralogy.

Naturally occurring Earthquakes

Tectonic Quakes happen all over the world where there is suf cient stored elastic strain energy to
drive fracture propagation along the fault line. The sides of the fault smoothly and aseismically
only if there are no irregularities or asperities along the fault surface that increase friction
resistance. Most faults do have these asperities which forms a stick and slip behavior(get yo minds
outta the gutter if you thought of something else). Once the fault has become locked, continued
relative motion lead to increasing stress thus storing strain energy in the volume of the fault’s
surface. This continues until the stored energy and stress has risen enough to break through
asperity, suddenly allowing the locked portion of the fault to slide over and release the stored
energy. The release energy is nightmarish concoction for radiated elastic seismic strain waves
along with heat from frictional movement of the fault surface and rock cracking
therefore…..EARTHQUAKE!!!!!
“What do My Town and I do during an Earthquake?” THESE!
Quakes are rapid,sudden,destructive shaking of the ground caused by the shifting of fault lines
underneath the surface of the planet. Quakes can cause res,tsunamis and a whole lot of other
things that can destroy another whole lot of things! So prepare before it even occurs!
1.Make an emergency plan!
Create a community communications plan that has an out-of-town contact. Always
plan where to meet when you get separated from each other or get lost and make a
supply kit that has enough rations like water(do not ration this drink when you get
thirsty)and food(you can survive a month without food so ration this) enough to
last multiples days or weeks or if you over prepare multiple months and always
have a ashlight and a whistle if you feel like it and strong enough to carry one
then get a re extinguisher!
1-Side Note:Being prepared will let you avoid unnecessary excursions lie food
hunting and medical supply runs and be able to address medical problems at
home like cuts and treating wounds at home.
2.Protect Your Home!
Make sure to secure your heavy items in your house like your
bookcases,fridges,tvs, and your stuff hanging in the walls like pictures or
paintings! If you can afford it, consider improving structural that can cause your
building to collapse and getting an earthquake insurance policy!
3.Stay safe during an earthquake!
3-1.If you’re in a car stop driving,unbuckle your seatbelts and put and set your
parking brake.(if your car can survive…..)

3-2.If you just woke and on bed then turn face down(not that face down…get your
mind outta the gutter you’re literally experiencing an earthquake.) and cover your
head and neck with pillows.(thicks pillows preferred!!)
3-3.If outdoors…..STAY OUTDOORS! And stay far away from buildings.
3-4.If inside………STAY INSIDE! And avoid doorways.
3-5.Drop(Or Lock)
Wherever you are make sure to drop down and hold tight to something sturdy. If
thou are on a wheelchair or walker that has a seat make sure to lock your wheels
until the shaking stops.
3-6.Take Cover!(no this isn’t CoD!)
Cover your neck and along with your head using your arms. If there’s a sturdy
table or desk go underneath it for shelter.If there is no shelter(THOU ARE
SCREWETH!) look for an interior wall away from windows or glass. Crawl only if
you can reach better shelter without going through more debris(common sense
please). Stay on your knees or bent over to protect your vital organs.
3-7.Hold on for your life!
If you’re underneath a sturdy table or desk hold on to it with one hand and be
prepared to move when it moves. If seated bend forward and cover your head with
your arms and hold on to your neck(with every bre of your being)with your
hands.
Stay safe after!
1.Wash your hands with soap and water after touching surfaces that are commonly
touched. If unable to spray hands with alcohol that’s at least 60%
2.Aftershocks!
Be prepared for aftershocks after the main quake so be ready to drop,cover and
roll!!
3.If you’re in a damaged building
Then go outside immediately and stay as far away from said building
