General Hospital, Chittagong was originally established as a dispensary in 1840. The clinic
was developed into a General Hospital on the Rangmahal Hill in Andarkilla, Chittagong. This
hill is historically important as the site of the Arakani Fort, which was burnt and ravaged by
the action of the Mughal Navy in their endeavor to conquer Chittagong in AD 1666.The two-
storied hospital building, with a trigonal engaged tower containing spiral stairs in the center
of the north fa'ade, had an accommodation for 52 indoor patients, 40 males and 12 females.
This colonial building is now being conserved and remains a landmark of the city.
In 1987, the hospital was converted to 80 beds and later increased to 150 beds. In 2012, the
hospital was increased by 100 beds to 250 beds which was officially inaugurated by Prime

Achievements of the organization

Chittagong General Hospital was the only place of hope for the patients affected by
Covid-19 in Chittagong after the arrival of Corona virus in the country. Although there
is a shortage of necessary equipment for the treatment of corona patients in the first
stage, it is currently fully operational. The General Hospital in Chittagong conducted
the first research in the country on the presence of antibodies in the body of corona
infected patients. The cross-sectional study of the concerned doctors on antibodies in
the body of corona patients with great skill is commendable. Chittagong will go further
in future in antibody research. It has been prominently published in various reputed
medical journals at home and abroad.

Skill and Attitude of the organization

Members of the organization are highly skilled in their field and show proper
dedication towards maintaining the health of the patients.

Financial Support
• Fully government funded

Limitation of the organization

• Last June, the maternity services at the General Hospital were revamped. Day
and night normal and cesarean delivery services for maternity patients are
introduced. But even though this rule has been introduced, there are complaints
of not getting service in practice.
• Referral system – complicated case referred to Chittagong medical College and
BITID. At that time the patients fell into suffering.
• Poor sanitation system.
• Poor ventilation system.
• Lack of social distance in covid related services.
• Inadequate drugs supply.
• Inadequate staffs according to patient demand.

Conclusion
The hospital, established in 1901, was largely neglected. 120 to 140 patients were
admitted in this 250-bed hospital. Patients were deprived of services due to shortage of
manpower and medical equipment. It was declared the only 'Dedicated Corona
Hospital' in Chittagong after the outbreak of Covid infection in March 2020. After two
and a half years, the hospital is now a self-contained healthcare center in Chittagong.
Various healthcare and service facilities are being added gradually. After the outbreak
of Corona, central oxygen plant was set up by private initiative, about 30 high flow
nasal cannula were provided, 18 ICU,12 CCU and 10 HDU beds were installed,
advanced washing plant was installed at a cost of about 2 crores, 500 liters of air per
minute was installed. 'Generator Oxygen Plant' completed oxygen production, free
cancer test, breast test and AIDS test for pregnant mothers, dope test started in
pathology department and dialysis department will be started in future, 10-storey
multipurpose building will be constructed. It is alleged that despite the development of
infrastructure, the confidence of the patients is not being created. The relevant
authorities should take immediate action in these matters. It will increase the trust of
common people on government hospitals.
