This is a special application attachment and cannot be operated like a standard
excavator front.

Do not operate equipment at full speed with cylinders near the end of stroke. This
will result in cylinder failure as well as structural damage to the long reach
sections and may cause injury or death!

Do not hoist down or rest stick on ground when cylinders are fully extended. This
will result in damage to the equipment and may cause injury or death!

READ COMPLETE OWNERS MANUAL FOR PROPER OPERATION

BEFORE OPERATING THIS MACHINE.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

INTRODUCTION
This owner’s manual is designed to familiarize the operator with all of the special
considerations and precautions necessary before operating a machine equipped with a
long reach front.

The long reach front is designed specifically for operation in loose, light materials with a
properly sized bucket. LR-6 series and above (super long reach fronts) are designed for
heavier-duty digging. The instructions in this manual describe many situations which
could cause structural damage to the long reach front if the machine is operated
incorrectly. Please thoroughly read and understand these instructions before attempting
operation of a hydraulic excavator equipped with a long reach front.

Also, the operator instructions in this manual are supplemental to the original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) excavator operator’s manual. Please review and understand the
safety considerations and operator precautions given here as well as the instructions
given in the OEM excavator manual. The instructions and precautions contained in the
OEM excavator manual all pertain to a machine equipped with a long reach attachment,
even if not specifically stated therein.

INTRODUCTION
FRONT INSTALLATION GUIDELINES:

PRIOR TO INSTALLING, THOROUGHLY READ OPERATION GUIDELINES

SECTION.

• Start by cleaning and lubricating all pin joints on the front using a recommended
grease (see Maintenance and Repair section).

• All joints should be properly shimmed to limit side to side movement. Pay attention to
keep the hoist (boom) cylinders parallel.

• Mount the main boom to the excavator.

• Connect the hydraulic hoses from the excavator to the tubes on the long reach front.
The hydraulic lines on the main boom should line up with the corresponding lines
from the excavator.

• Mount the stick to the main boom and connect the hydraulic jumper hoses.

• After the front is installed it should be cycled very slowly to check clearance between
all components. Pay particular attention to the hose routing as well as the hoist
cylinder plumbing. This should be done throughout the entire range of motion.

• Once clearance has been verified, each circuit should be operated very slowly
several times to purge any air trapped in the system.

• Continue on to Setup section to adjust operating pressures.

OPERATION GUIDLINES
PIERCE LONG REACH FRONT:

The Pierce Pacific long reach front is a tool designed specifically to extend the working
range of a standard excavator in specialty applications. While similar in general
configuration to a standard excavating front, a long reach front requires special
operational procedures due to the extreme length and required lightweight construction.
Damage will occur if these fronts are operated the same as a standard excavator.
Some operating guidelines are listed below. Not every operating circumstance can be
covered, so consider these guidelines to be general and expand on them to meet
specific work site conditions.

1) Side loading is a major cause of component failure in a long reach front. Failures
can manifest themselves as structural, pin/bushing, and cylinder problems. These
long, narrow structures have very limited strength to resist lateral loads and were
designed to dig/move material in-line with the boom using the stick (arm) crowd
force and bucket curl force. Avoid these common causes of side loading:
A. Swinging the machine while stick or bucket are engaged in material.
B. Swinging the front or bucket into a stationary object.
C. Dragging a load/object with the machine swing or travel functions.
D. Rotating the upper at a high rate while the front is at or near full extension or
carrying maximum load.
E. Abrupt starts and stops of the swing function.

2) These fronts are designed to resist the maximum digging forces generated by the
stick and bucket cylinders and the maximum lifting force generated by the hoist
cylinders. Never attempt to increase the digging force by the use of the travel, swing,
or hoist down functions.

Continued on next page…

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

OPERATION GUIDLINES
PIERCE LONG REACH FRONT CONTINUED:
3) Never use the hoist cylinders to plunge the bucket into material.

4) Match the excavator, front, and bucket to the work required. Pierce Pacific has
specific ditch cleaning and digging bucket recommendations for each model of long
reach front. Exceeding these size recommendations without approval from Pierce
Pacific may void warranty.

5) Avoid operating long reach fronts with the cylinders fully extended or fully retracted.
Although the cylinders are internally cushioned during operation, when at the full
extents of their stroke they become solid structural members. With the extreme lever
arm created by the added length of the stick structure, it is possible to induce very
high mechanical loads into the cylinders. Failures typical of this type of mechanical
overloading include broken cylinder rods and broken or damaged cylinder pins.
Whenever possible, the machine should be positioned where the bulk of the work
can be performed with the cylinders in the center 90% of their range.

6) Correctly positioning the long reach front for transport is essential for cylinder and
structural longevity. See the transport diagram in this section for proper procedures.

7) Never park a machine equipped with a long reach front with the stick cylinder fully
extended. See parking position diagram in this section for proper positioning.

8) Smooth operation of the long reach front is a key to long and trouble free service.
Gradual starts and stops when swinging greatly reduces side loading on the
structures. Flow control valves are used in some configurations to limit the speed of
functions. See Setup section for proper adjustment.

OPERATION GUIDLINES

WARNING
CRUSH HAZARD!

IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO CONTACT THE CAB WITH THE BUCKET

WHEN STICK IS FULLY TUCKED. THIS COULD RESULT IN BODILY
INJURY OR DEATH TO OPERATOR AND DAMAGE TO THE CAB.
USE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE OPERATING IN THIS RANGE.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

OPERATION GUIDLINES
1. The long reach front is designed for
light work (excluding LR-6 series and
above) with a specific attachment.
Pierce should be contacted prior to
operating a machine in any application
other than specified when the unit was
purchased.

2. When performing swing operations,

especially with the bucked loaded, the
swing cycle must be engaged very
smoothly. Never stop swing movement
abruptly, as it will cause the long reach
front to swing violently and possibly
damage it and/or the machine and
operator.

3. The boom, stick, and bucket of a long

reach attachment have more inertia
when moving than that of a standard
length front. For this reason, when the
cylinders near the end of their stroke,
the function engaged must be
released slowly so that the cylinder
does not bottom out and stop abruptly.
Abrupt stops caused by taking the
cylinders to the end of the stroke can
damage the cylinders and/or long
reach front.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

OPERATION GUIDLINES
4. Do not use the bucket of a long reach
attachment to level off or knock down
objects while performing left or right
swing motions. The long reach front is
not designed for the loads that are
applied to the structures when using it
to sweep.

5. All digging and swing operations need

to be completed while the machine is
on level ground. No digging or swing
operations should be performed while
on a slope, due to the increased
momentum created by the larger long
reach front.

6. The long reach attachment is

specifically designed for use with a
specified bucket only. The long reach
attachment is not designed for use
with any other type of tool or
implement, other than the specified
bucket.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

OPERATION GUIDLINES
7. The long reach attachment is not to be
used for any type of lifting operation,
especially heavy or unbalanced loads
which may cause a large amount of
stress due to uneven loading from a
load shifting during operation.

8. On a machine equipped with a long

reach front, never apply down
pressure on the attachment in order to
lift the machine undercarriage off the
ground. This maneuver causes a large
amount of stress on the front.

9. Do not attempt to load the bucket on a

machine equipped with a long reach
front by using the travel function and
pulling the bucket to load it. This
situation causes the front to be
subjected to extremely high forces and
may cause damage.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

OPERATION GUIDLINES
10. Do not allow a machine with a long
reach front to perform a chopping
technique in order to loosen or break
up material. Instead, lower the
attachment smoothly to the ground so
that no shock loads are transmitted to
the front.

11. The long reach front is not designed

for side loading during the digging
cycle. When loading the bucket, do not
apply right or left swing pressure to
force the bucket into the side of the
ditch.

12. The heavy lift and power boost

features must not be used on a
machine equipped with a long reach
front. These features should be
disabled prior to operating a long
reach front. A qualified distributor
should be contacted to disable the
heavy lift and power boost features if
this has not been done on your
machine.

TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURE (LR-4 SERIES AND BELOW):
It is very important that transportation of a machine equipped with a long reach front is
properly executed. If the machine is not prepared properly, serious damage may occur
to the front and stick cylinder.

1. Curl stick in transport position and lower main boom. Do not rest stick on the
ground or transport trailer.
2. Carefully remove the pin at the storage end of the transport link located on the
bottom plate of the main boom and swing it down to the ears on the stick.
3. Lock the link in place with the pin removed in step 2.
4. Rest the front on the kneeling pad on the stick. Pad may be integrated in bucket
cylinder ears on some models.

SETUP
LINE RELIEF PRESSURES:

A Pierce long reach front is designed and analyzed for the specific excavator OEM it
will be used with. Each attachment is engineered for digging and lifting payloads at the
max output of the hydraulic system of that OEM, excluding heavy lift or power boost
systems. Pierce long reach fronts are not designed for these systems and they must be
disabled prior to putting into service. It is also necessary to adjust the line relief
pressures for each circuit for all machines that will be using a long reach front. Typically
OEMs specify valve line reliefs to be set just above the pump main relief pressure so
that max power is available for digging. This does not work well for a long reach front
where load spikes from momentum and outside forces are amplified by the long lever
arm of the front. To help dissipate pressure spikes and dynamic loading on the
structures, the line reliefs should be set lower than the system main relief in some
cases. This will allow fast relief of pressure spikes from outside forces and momentum.
These settings will ensure the front will not see pressure spikes greater than the
system pressure it was designed for.

The heavy lift and power boost circuits must be disabled prior to any operation
with a long reach front.

USE OEM LONG REACH RELIEF PRESSUE RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN

AVAILAVLE. USE BELOW PRESSURE SETTINGS IF OEM LONG REACH
PRESSURE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE:

MAIN RELIEF:..................................................................................5000 PSI (34.4 MPa)

(Use OEM main relief pressure specification when available)
BOOM LOWER:...............................................................................4200 PSI (29.0 MPa)
BOOM RAISE:.................................................................................5250 PSI (34.4 MPa)
STICK IN (CYLINDER EXTEND):...................................................4200 PSI (29.0 MPa)
STICK OUT (CYLINDER RETRACT):.............................................5250 PSI (31.1 MPa)
BUCKET IN/OUT:............................................................................4200 PSI (29.0 MPa)

Contact Pierce Pacific engineering department for approval before deviating from the
above line relief pressure settings.

(EXAMPLE ONLY, EQUIPMENT MAY VARY)

Due to the long lever arm of a Pierce long reach front it is necessary to restrict the stick
circuit oil flow to maintain a safe operating speed. LR-2, LR-3, and LR-3.2 models are
equipped with flow control valves integrated into the hard plumbing to slow down stick
movements.

LR-2 series fronts are shipped with the valve 1 turn from fully open.
LR-3/LR-3.2 series fronts are shipped with the valve 4.5 turns from fully open.

Begin operating the front. If operation feels jerky or erratic, contact Pierce Pacific
Manufacturing for instructions.

Never run the machine with the valve fully closed. Damage will occur.

Although the cylinders are cushioned, do not come to the end of the stroke at high
speed. Damage to the cylinder or front may occur.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
INTRODUCTION:
Operating safety and machine longevity are dependent on two key factors.

1. Performing regular inspections.

2. Performing regular maintenance.

Please take a few minutes and study this material before performing inspections or
maintenance on this machine. It contains valuable information that will improve
operator safety and the service life of the machine. If you have any questions, contact
your dealer or Pierce Pacific Manufacturing.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
INSPECTION:
Regular inspection, servicing, and maintenance are extremely important in the safe use
of all equipment. We suggest the following as a daily walk around guide:

WHY:
1. Safety of the operator and those in close proximity to the machine being
operated is the first and foremost benefit of a thorough inspection.
2. A complete understanding of critical areas will prevent unplanned downtime
and an opportunity to repair before failure.

WHO:
The operator is the key person in this step. If during inspection distress or areas
of concern are observed, the operator can solicit help as required. Detailed
photos greatly enhance the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

WHEN:
The walk around should be performed each shift before starting the engine or
moving the machine.

HOW:
Use this guide for Pierce products. Refer to the excavator manual for detailed
procedures for the machine.

BOLTED JOINTS:
Bolted joints are an important part of a machine’s design for fastening one
component to another.
A properly designed and functioning bolted joint will only feel a portion of the
applied load moving across it. The joint face friction carries most of the load. If a
bolted joint is allowed to operate loose (this is evidenced by red or black oxide
seeping out of the joint), the fasteners will fail in fatigue and present both safety
issues as well as unplanned downtime. Many times additional damage could have
been prevented by proper tightening of the joint.

©2019 Pierce Pacific Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved. Engineering

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
INSPECTION CONTINUED:
PINNED JOINTS:
Pinned joints are an important part of a thorough inspection.
1. Is the method of pin retention in place and working?
2. Is there lubrication visible at the joint?
3. If the manufacturer requires a minimum of molybdenum content, does the
contents on the grease tube state that it contains molybdenum disulfide?
4. Is there excessive clearance between the pin and bushing?
SWING BEARING:
This inspection includes bolted joints, welded joints, and adequate lubrication to
prevent corrosion and provide lubrication requirements.
Inspect all fasteners for being in place and tight. Fresh grease should be visible at
labyrinth seals.
Swing pinion lube should be checked.
WELDED JOINTS:
Welding is a crucial and vital part of equipment design and assembly.
Machines can be subject to weld failures anytime in their useful life. Therefore,
new machines require welded joint inspection just as high hour machines require
welded joint inspection.
1. Cracked paint is a key indicator of structural failure.
2. Cracking found in early stages can generally be scheduled for repair without
unplanned downtime.
3. Cracking usually occurs in high stress areas where structures change shape
or cross section.
4. Contact Pierce Pacific Manufacturing for proper weld procedures.
HYDRAULIC LINES:
Completely inspect all hoses, fittings, and rigid tube lines. Any component
showing evidence of the following should be corrected or replaced:
1. Hydraulic oil leakage at the surface of the flexible hose or its junction with
metal and couplings.
2. Blistering or abnormal deformation to the outer covering of the hydraulic
hose.
3. Hydraulic oil leakage at any threaded or clamped joint that cannot be
eliminated by normal tightening.
4. Excessive abrasion or scrubbing on the outer surface of a hose, rigid tube, or
fitting.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
MAINTENANCE:

DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIRS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. CONTACT THE

DEALER OR PEIRCE PACIFIC MANUFACTURING.

We recommend that all parts be obtained from the OEM to maintain the strength and
quality of the original machine. Refer to Parts Ordering Info section for Pierce
components.

Any parts replacement or repairs which will correct a SAFETY HAZARD must be
COMPLETED BEFORE OPERATION IS RESUMED.

ALL WELDING SHOULD BE PERFORMED BY A QUALIFIED WELDER.

Contact Pierce Pacific Manufacturing for correct repair and welding procedures.

Cleanliness is extremely important. All repairs should be performed in a clean shop

area. At no time should any major component be disassembled and repaired in the
field.

A periodic steam cleaning and painting of the long reach front is necessary. This type of
maintenance is at the discretion of the owner but it is recommended that it be done
regularly to keep all moving parts free from contamination.

Steam cleaning is also an excellent time to thoroughly examine all the components for
possible cracks or other fatigue failures.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
CYLINDERS:
A cylinder which drifts or creeps when controls are in neutral may indicate internal
leakage and should be investigated by a qualified mechanic. We recommend all Pierce
hydraulic cylinders in question be returned to our plant or exchanged for a factory
rebuilt cylinder. In the event this is not possible and repairs must be performed by the
dealer or user, please note the following:

• To install packing without damage, preheat packing kit.

• Lubricate seals with hydraulic oil prior to assembly.
• Properly torque piston nut and cylinder head bolts. Refer to cylinder drawing for
reference.
• Pressure test cylinders after assembly and prior to reinstallation.

AWAYS OBSERVE THESE PRECAUTIONS

If the hydraulic fluid escapes, the attachment can fall immediately, endangering
anything below. Make sure blocking or solid ground (not hydraulic oil) is actually
supporting the attachment.

Release system pressure before attempting to make adjustments or repairs. Consult

the excavator manufacturer’s instructions for procedures. PRESSURE MUST BE
RELEASED CORRECTLY. REMEMBER, pressure can be maintained in the hydraulic
circuits long after the engine has been shut down.

DO NOT USE YOUR HANDS TO SEARCH FOR SUSPECTED LEAKS.
