Read Slides 18-35 of the powerpoint material on the SPIRITUAL SELF and answer
the following:

1. SPIRITUAL IDENTITY- the persistent sense of self that focuses on the


individual’s construction of a relationship to the sacred and ultimate meaning.

2. SPIRITUAL SELF - Considered the higher self, the inner self and a person’s true
being that is greatly influenced by a spiritual deity.

3. VIKTOR FRANKL - the Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor who wrote
the book Man’s Search for Meaning that taught us the primary purpose of life,
which is the quest for meaning.

4. LOGOTHERAPY - the new school of existential therapy which is based in the


premise that man’s underlying motivator in life is a “will to meaning” even in the
most difficult circumstances.

5. LOGOS - this Greek word means “reason or meaning”

6. Enumerate the three (3) basic principles on discovering meaning in life:


a. MEANING IN LIFE
b. WILL TO MEANING
c. FREEDOM TO WILL

7. MEANING IN LIFE - Based on #6, this principle emphasizes that despite a


person’s wealth, status or gender and despite difficulties and sufferings, he
should discover the meaning in life events and circumstances.

8. WILL TO MEANING - Based on #6, this principle emphasizes that we should


discover what the experience means to be fulfilled.

9. FREEDOM TO WILL - Based on #6, this principle emphasizes that we are given
the freedom to make life choices which includes how they respond to life events.

10. Enumerate the three (3) barriers to humanity’s quest for meaning in life according
to Victor Frankl:
a. AFFLUENCE
b. HEDONISM
c. MATERIALISM

11. EXISTENTIAL VACUUM - the psychological condition in which a person doubts,


whether life has any meaning. This new neurosis is characterized by a loss of
interest and a lack of initiative.

12. Give at least three (3) characteristics of spiritually active people:

a. COMMIT
b. PRACTICE
c. STUDY

13. What are your thoughts about this statement? “Individuals with faith in a
higher being are able to face life challenges with greater confidence and
hope.” Is this applicable to you? Why or why not?
Yes, it is applicable to me. By having faith in God and entrusting myself to him. I am
more confident and hope that I can overcome all the challenges I have in life. By
praying and asking for God’s guidance I am confident that I can overcome my problems
in life.

14. What do you plan to do to nurture your spiritual self?


through praying, going to church, and having faith in God. similar to enlisting in religious
institutions that could support my spiritual growth. By undertaking actions that can assist
me develop my trust in God. At the same time enabling other people to strengthen their
spiritual faith.
