H. Making The lines that run across the grid -- the flat lines -- are lines of latitude.
Generalizations The Equator is an example of a line of latitude. The Equator is the
and latitude line that divides Earth into two hemispheres, the northern

the western hemisphere. The Prime Meridian is the 0 point of longitude.
Longitude lines East of the Prime Meridian are referred to as East
longitude; longitude lines West of the Prime Meridian are referred to as
West longitude.

Activity 1: Where in the World is the Philippines? (Part I)

Objective:
After performing this activity, you should be able to describe the location of the Philippines
using latitude and longitude.

What to use:
o Globes or World Map

What to do:
1. Study the image of a globe or world map on the right. Then get a real globe
and identify the parts that are labelled in the image. Be ready to point them
out when your teachers asks you.
2. After studying the globe and the image on the right, try to define “equator” in
your own words. Give your own definition when your teacher asks you.
3. The “northern hemisphere” is that part of the world between the North Pole
and the equator. Show the northern hemisphere on the globe when your
teacher asks you.

4. Where is the “southern hemisphere”? Show the southern hemisphere on the globe when your

Q8. Starting at the Prime Meridian, moving 180 degrees to the east or to the west brings you to
longitude 180°. Like the Prime Meridian, longitude 180° represents the boundary of the eastern
hemisphere and western hemisphere. The Prime Meridian and longitude 180° are on opposite
sides of the world.

Q10. The latitude and longitude of Manila is 14°N, 121°E. This reading is approximate. It may be
difficult to get exact readings from a globe, so estimates are acceptable. Q11. Locating cities
such as Manila is easy. Manila is just a “spot” on the globe. But locating a whole country like
the Philippines may be challenging because the country is not a “spot,” it is an “area.” Since the
boundary of the Philippines (or any country, for that matter) is irregular, we can simplify things
by drawing a rectangle around the Philippines. So, how do you describe the location of the
rectangle? One way is by getting the latitude and longitude of each corner of the rectangle. The
Philippines is located within that rectangle.
