Direction: Match different description
of latitude and longitude.
Direction: Identify the coordinate pairs
of the following items. Write your
answers in the space provided for.
GLOBE

The globe is the model of Planet Earth.

It is the shape of a sphere or a ball.

We usually use the globe to find places on

Earth.
MAP

A two-dimensional graphical
representation of an area, land or area,
depicting physical features
COORDINATE SYSTEM

A method for identifying the location of a

point on the Earth.
Lines of Latitude and Longitude

It is difficult to find a place on the globe. Therefore, scientists created imaginary

lines to make it easier.
Lines of Latitude and Longitude

These imaginary lines are called lines of latitude and longitude.

These lines help us to

climate regions
The Equator

The equator is the line that cuts the Earth into two equal parts called
hemispheres.
Northern Hemisphere.

The part which is to the north of the equator.

Southern Hemisphere

The part which is to the south of the equator.

Lines of Latitude

Lines of latitude are parallel to the equator.

Lines of Latitude

They run East to West.

Lines of Latitude

They are used to locate places on the globe and determine all climate regions
around the world.
Lines of Latitude

They are measured by degrees (°). The equator is 0° latitude.

Lines of Latitude

There are 90 lines of latitude to the North of the equator and 90 lines to its
South.

Lines of Longitude

The lines of longitude are perpendicular to the lines of latitude. All lines of
longitude run through both the North and South Poles.
Lines of Longitude

The lines of longitude are also called Meridians. They all have the same
length.
The Prime Meridian

It is the line of longitude which passes through Greenwich, England, is

internationally agreed to be the line 0° line of longitude.

Lines of Longitude

There are 180 degrees of longitude to the East of the Prime Meridian and 180
degrees of longitude to its West.

How Places on Earth
may be Located using
Coordinate System
Using the ASIA Map, locate the
places on Earth using the coordinates
given. The group who locates the
places first will be declared the
winner."
Situation 1:
You are an investigator, and you were
told investigate in these coordinates: 20
degrees latitude and 90-degrees
longitude. Now locate it on the map.
Situation 2:
You were born a pirate, but a good pirate and
you are the protector of the seas because the sea
is your treasure and you wanted to protect it
from bad people. You received a report that
there is a poacher collecting endangered species
of turtles in these coordinates 40 degrees
latitude and 125 degrees longitude.
