LESSON 1
DIRECTION
The other part needed to locate places on Earth is direction. To really understand this lesson we
must be familiarize ourselves about the different direction.
What are the different types of direction?
2 types of direction:
1. CARDINAL DIRECTION
- North
- South
- East
- west
2. INTERMEDIATE DIRECTION – they
are located midway between the
cardinal direction.
- Northeast
- Southeast
- Northwest
- Southwest
Is there any
material can we
used to locate
places on Earth?
YES !
We have
MAPS and
GLOBE
C.ROJAS, OMNHS 2020
MAP
• MAPS are important tools for
geographers. It is a symbolic
representation of selected
characteristic of a place,
usually drawn on a flat surface.
GLOBE
• A GLOBE is a three-dimensional, spherical,
scale model of Earth (terrestrial
globe or geographical globe) or other celestial
body such as a planet or moon.
• the term globe is used only for models of
objects that are approximately spherical.
• The word “globe” comes from
the latin word globus, meaning round mass
or sphere
• Some terrestrial globes include relief to show
mountains and other features on the Earth’s
surface. The “northern hemisphere” is that
part of the world between the North
Pole and the equator.
The “southern hemisphere” is that
part of the world between the South
Pole and the equator.
Equator is 0° 𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒
North Pole is 90° 𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒
South Pole is 90° 𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒

ACTIVITY 2
Objective
After performing this activity, you should be able to describe the location of the Philippines with
respect to the surrounding landmasses and bodies of water.
What to use?
globe or world map
What to do?
1. Using a globe or a world map as reference, label the blank map below.
2. Your labelled map should include the following:
LANDMASSES BODIES OF WATER
1. Philippine 7. Philippine Sea
2. Asian continent 8. South China Sea
3. Malay peninsula 9. Indian Ocean
4. Isthmus of Kra 10. Pacific Ocean
5. Indonesian archipelago
6. Australian continent
Q1. Which bodies of water in the list are found to the west of the Philippines?
Q2. Which body of water in the list is located to the east of the Philippines?
Q3. Which large landmass is found to the north of the Philippines?
Q4. Where is the Philippines?
3. Label the map below using their corresponding numbers. EX. If the answer for Q1 is Pacific
ocean then you will label the map with #10 where the Pacific ocean can be found

LESSON 2
COORDINATE SYSTEM
Coordinate system is a method for identifying the location of a point on
the earth using two numbers, a coordinate. The coordinate system that we
use to locate places on Earth is the terrestrial system. The coordinates in
the terrestrial system are latitude and longitude.
EXAMPLE:
1. 45° 𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 30° 𝑊
2. 60° 𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 30° 𝐸
3. 60° 𝑆 𝑎𝑛𝑑 45° 𝑊
4. 30° 𝑆 𝑎𝑛𝑑 45° 𝐸
NOTE:
1. All the numbers at the TOP is for WEST
(from 0 to left) and EAST (from 0 to
right).
2. All the numbers at the SIDE is for
NORTH (from 0 to top) and SOUTH
(from 0 to bottom).
More information belowr.
LATITUDE
• The set of lines crossing the Earth’s surface
Longitude and Latitude horizontally.
• Latitude are numbered based on how far north or
south they are from an imaginary line called the
equator
• This line circles the Earth exactly halfway between the
North Pole (NP) and South Pole (SP).
• The equator is 00 latitude. Equator is the staring point
of latitude.
• There are 90 degrees between it and each of the poles.
• Area between the equator and NP is “north” latitude
(220N)
• Area between the equator and SP is “south” latitude
(220S)
• NP is 90 degrees latitude
• SP is 90 degress latitude
NOTE: LATITUDE nos. at the SIDE of your map.
C.ROJAS, OMNHS 2020
LONGITUDE
A set of lines that run vertically along Earth’s surface
Lines of longitude are numbered based on how far east
or west they are from another imaginary line.
The starting point of longitude is Prime Meridian.
Prime Meridian (PM) is 00 longitude.
There are 1800 of longitude east of the PM and 1800
degrees west of it.
To the right of the Prime Meridian, the longitude is
written as 15°E (15 degrees east), 30°E (30 degrees
east), and so on.
To the left of the Prime Meridian, the longitude is
written as 15°W (15 degrees west), 30°W (30 degrees
west), and so on up to 180°.
NOTE: LONGITUDE nos. at the TOP of your map.
The prime meridian does not circle the globe as the equator does.
The PM runs from the NP to SP
At 1800 on the other side of the globe the meridian is called the
INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE.
The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line of demarcation on
the surface of Earth that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and
demarcates the change of one calendar day to the next.
Global Grid
When lines of latitude and
longitude cross a grid is formed.
The grid is used to located certain
places on earth

LESSON 3
The Latitude and Its Climate
There are major lines of latitude. Each line correspond a unique characteristic. The lines of latitude
are also known as parallels of latitude. That is because the lines of latitude are parallel to the equator and
to each other. Five lines of latitude have special names. They are listed in the table below. The latitude
values have been rounded off to the nearest half-degree.
LATITUDE NAME
0° Equator
23.5°N Tropic of Cancer
23.5°S Tropic of Capricorn
66.5°N Arctic Circle
66.5°S Antarctic Circle
Look at the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic
of Capricorn. The part of the world
between the Tropic of Cancer and
Capricorn lines is called the tropics.
Countries that are located in this zone
experience a tropical climate where the
annual average temperature is above 18°C.
Now, find the Arctic Circle and the
Antarctic Circle on the above illustration.
Between the Tropic of Cancer and the
Arctic Circle is the northern temperate
zone; between the Tropic of Capricorn and
the Antarctic Circle is the southern
temperate zone. Countries in these zones
go through four seasons – winter, spring
summer, and autumn.
Finally, the areas within the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle are called the Polar Regions or frigid zones.
People who choose to live in these areas have to deal with temperatures that never go above 10°C. It is
cold all year round and even during the summer months, it does not feel like summer at all.
