CASE STUDIES
CASE STUDY 1:
Water Sustainability
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia –
Raymond International’s Contribution

Raymond International has been involved in every water

transmission project in Saudi Arabia since 1978 when desalinated
water was first produced in the Kingdom. Raymond International’s
‘Centriline Process’ lining of steel pipes has provided corrosion
free pipeline operations for over 40 years.

Saudi Arabia is the largest producer of desalinated water. On an

international scale, Saudi Arabia produces 22% of the total of
desalinated water in the world. Currently there are 31 desalination
plants producing more than 2.4 billion m³ of potable water per
annum, which represents 54% of the production in the GCC
region, and approximately 35% of the Arab region as a whole.
Researchers at King Abulaziz University in Jeddah
estimate that the demand for desalinated water
increases by roughly 14% each year.

More desalination plants are planned. In 2021 the Shuqaiq Phase 3 desalination plant,
located on the Red Sea, will be one of Saudi Arabia's biggest desalination plants. The
plant will process 450,000 m³ per day and cater for a population of 2 million people in the
Southern region of Saudi Arabia.

The capital Riyadh is supplied with desalinated water pumped from the city of Jubail on
the Arabian Gulf. In 2019 Raymond International started corrosion protection work on
a 412 km long twin 2.2 meter diameter pipeline which will be one of the largest water
transmission systems in the world. The pipelines will transport 1.2 million m³ of potable
water per day to meet the ever growing demand for water in Riyadh city.
CASE STUDY 2:

PIPELINE
SERVICES
CEMENT MORTAR LINING
The Raymond Centriline Process of cement mortar lining is applied to new and
existing pipelines to extend the original design life of the pipeline by preventing
internal corrosion.

The lining can be applied either insitu after the pipes have been installed or in a
stackyard adjacent to the project prior to installation. Linings can either be cement
mortar lining consisting of ordinary Portland cement mortar, ideal for potable water,
or specialist chemically resistant mortars for wastewater projects which are subject
to hydrogen sulphide attack.

On site application techniques used in refurbishment of existing pipelines are

designed using trenchless technology with the minimum amount of traffic
disruption.

The Centriline Process can be used in pipes with a diameter as small as 75mm and
in tunnels up to 6000mm diameter.

Linings can be modified with microsilica fume for less permeability and enhanced
erosion resistance suitable for use in seawater transmission and water injection
pipelines.

H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide) resistant mortars consisting of calcium aluminate

cements and synthetic aggregates are applied to pipelines and sewers to reduce
the corrosive action of the effluent.
RUBBER LINING
Rubber lining is applied to the interior surfaces of pipes, fittings,
vessels and tanks to provide protection from corrosive substances.
Our dedicated rubber lining plants are equipped with autoclaves,
refrigerated facilities, steam and water boilers.

Raymond's rubber lining equipment and tools are also portable

enabling lining of steel storage tanks to take place insitu.

Raymond has strategic alliances with major international

manufacturers of rubber and apply hard or soft natural rubber, butyl
and neoprene linings.

These linings provide ideal corrosion protection for steel surfaces

that are exposed to severe chemical stresses. For shop lining, the
lined pipes are vulcanized in an autoclave with temperatures up to
150°C and pressure up to 6 bar.
EPOXY LINING
Internal LPE is a coating system which consists of a two-part liquid phenolic
epoxy paint, applied in a single or multi-coat to the inside surface of an
abrasively blast cleaned surface to provide anti-corrosion protection to the
steel. In addition to corrosion protection, the internal LPE also provides a
smooth internal pipe surface for improved flow performance and efficiency.
Internal LPE provides a lining solution against potential product contamination
by the internal surface of steel pipes.

Raymond International boasts a state of the art facility tailored to apply

LPE coatings onto the internal pipe surface to suit the various construction
methods, pipeline design parameters and service conditions for which the
pipes are designed for. The coating facility is capable of applying internal LPE
to pipes or spools from 3 inches diameter and above and to a maximum of
12-meter long pipes or spools.

Abrasive blasting and application of coatings to the internal parts of a pipe

could be challenging especially when the piping is in the form of spools with
difficult configurations. With decades of experience and professional technical
resources, Raymond International remains an industry leader in providing
solutions to these challenges. The liquid phenolic epoxy is applied to the
pipes inner surface by special internal screw controlled and scissor armed
adjustable crawler spray guns to give a specified uniform coating thickness of
the phenolic epoxy coating.
FUSION BONDED EPOXY
Fusion Bonded Epoxy

• The epoxy coating is applied in powder form by hand

spraying onto a blast-cleaned and pre-heated pipe and
fittings. Once in contact with the hot pipe, the powder
melts, flows and cures, forming a coating with excellent
adhesion and resistance to cathodic disbondment

the client’s designated location
POLYETHYLENE ROTOLINING
Rotolining is a lining technique that allows a chemically modified polyethylene to form a bond with metals or other resins and
enables vessels and pipes of a complex shape and limited access to be lined seamlessly and without difficulty, linings can be
made significantly thicker than by other method. The bonded plastic can be used to line metal vessels, pipes, tanks or any other
components that require corrosion protection and chemical resistance.
CUSTOM COATINGS
POWDER & LIQUID
Industrial custom coatings applied at Raymond’s facilities include powder, liquid and
thermal spray corrosion protective coatings for pipes, fittings and prefabricated pipe
spools.

Raymond’s custom coating plants are fitted with state of the art equipment for preparing,
coating and handling a wide range of piping. Manual and automated application and
process control techniques have been developed to ensure product quality.

Liquid epoxy and fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) powder spray coatings are applied in
enclosed rooms to maintain a clean working environment. The plant layout is designed
to facilitate a smooth flow of piping through the various processes. These coatings have
excellent adhesion to steel pipe surfaces and provide long term corrosion resistance.

Thermal spray aluminium and thermal spray cladding provide dependable corrosion
protection for pipelines and for tubes/waterwalls in boilers where high temperature
corrosion and/or erosion may occur. Thermal arc spraying, commonly known as metal
spray coating, is a process by which metals are sprayed onto the surface of another
material using a high velocity continuous combustion process. This process changes the
pipe surface properties by providing improved thermal conductivity and wear resistance.
HIGH BUILD EPOXY
PIPE COATING
Raymond is an approved/certified applicator of high build epoxy
(HBE) coatings on pipelines based on state of the art Novolac
epoxy/urethane chemistry.

These are fast cure, solvent free, high build epoxy coatings. They
are applied by using electronic proportioning, plural component,
airless spray equipment. HBE is an abrasion resistance overlay
which is compatible with fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) main line
coatings.

The coatings can withstand pipeline operating temperatures up to

302°F (150°C). HBE coatings can be used externally for pipelines
in buried or immersed services. Other uses are for coating pipe
spools, fittings, valves and for rehabilitation of existing pipelines.

The coatings can also be hand applied to girthwelds, tie-ins and

for rehabilitation of existing pipelines.
FIELD JOINTS COATING
Field coating services involves the coating of welded joints
(girthweld joints) for onshore and offshore pipelines, as well as
insitu custom coating services at the client’s designated location.

CONCRETE WEIGHT COATING
Raymond International is a proven industry leader,
providing on site weight coating.
The coating can be carried at the site in strings or individual pipes,
thus saving time and money in transportation.

Concrete weight coating is used for marine pipelines and river

crossing for negative buoyancy and to counteract the effects of
currents.

Concrete is applied to pipelines to provide a negative buoyancy,

which prevents the pipe from floating in high water table terrain
such as swamp land.

Pipe with a continuous concrete coating is used offshore as well

as river crossings. The concrete provides protection for the pipe as
well as negative buoyancy.

The RAYCOAT method has proven to be the most economical and

convenient method of weight coating.

scheduling. These specialist systems continually track and report the status of
all stages of fabrication. Control is assured worldwide.
GRP SLIP LINING & THERMO PLASTIC PIPE INSTALLATION
Raymond International can refurbish aging concrete pipelines by slip lining with GRP pipe liners.

The GRP slip lining system consists of one or more pieces of multi
sectional glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) panels manufactured
from a selection of thermosetting resins and reinforced with glass
fibre chopped strand mat. A glass surfacing tissue liner layer
provides additional corrosion protection and abrasion resistance.

The main structure of the liner and make-up of the liner wall
incorporates a corrosion barrier on the inside surface followed by
resin.

In procedures utilizing GRP liners, the annular space between the

wall of the host pipe and the liners is filled with a cement grout.
The high strength of the grout and the strength and durability of the
GRP lining ensures a long life for the composite unit.

Raymond also supplies and installs a wide range of thermoplastic

pipelines including those manufactured from Glass Reinforced
Epoxy (GRE), Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP), and Reinforced
Thermo Resin Setting (RTR) materials.

These pipelines are used in plant applications for sea water

intake and outfall lines, cooling and process piping, chemical and
chlorination systems in diameters ranging from 100mm to 4000mm.
TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY
PIPE BURSTING
Where a CCTV survey shows that the pipeline is beyond repair or the
system requires the line to be up-sized, the client has no option but to
replace the pipeline. This can be done by open cut with all the associated
costs and disruption or by bursting the pipeline and pulling in a new
pipeline in its place.

Pipe bursting, which can be either pneumatic, hydraulic expansion or

static pull, fractures the old pipeline insitu and displaces the fragments
outward while a new HDPE pipeline is inserted in its place.

Pipe bursting is one of the most economical ways to replace a buried

pipeline. The direct costs are lower than the traditional costs of open cut
methods. When pipes are buried under process plants or utility services,
the relative costs of pipe bursting are very low. When time, disruption and
restoration are taken into account, pipe bursting is a valued alternative to
traditional open cut pipe replacement.
HDPE TIGHT FIT LINING
The process involves the insertion of a tight-fitting high density
Polyethylene (HDPE) liner pipe inside of a steel pipe. This takes
advantage of the mechanical strength of the steel pipe combined with
the abrasion and corrosion resistance of the HDPE liner pipe. Because
of the tight fitting design, the liner pipe is radially compressed (rolled
down) to reduce its outside diameter during the insertion process.
Insertion lengths can vary from short pull lengths to long pull lengths of
up to 1,500 meters, depending on the pipe diameter and topographical
contour of the pipeline.

The roller reduction method involves the radial compression of the

HDPE liner pipe by passing it through a series of roller reduction units
during the insertion process. Once installed, the HDPE liner expands
within the steel pipe and fits tight against the pipe wall.
TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY
CURED IN PLACE PIPE
Cured in place pipe are tailored for the individual pipeline to be
renovated, a felt carrier is impregnated with resin before being
transported to the site location for inversion into the host pipe.

The liner is inverted through the pipeline using water hydraulics this
pushes the lining through the pipe and enables the liner to negotiate
varying shapes and bends the water pressure inflates the liner to
create a close fit lining against the host pipe. When completely inverted
the resin is cured by heating the inversion water or by ambient cure.

The resultant lining is a structurally sound cured in place pipe which

enhances the hydraulic flow of the pipeline. In addition the lining has
excellent abrasive resistant values.
