MOVIE REVIEW

Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days

By Ckyr Leonardo

The movie, which targets a broad audience, debuted in South Korea on August 1 with
a record 1.24 million admissions ($8.6 million) on its opening day. It should continue to
perform very strongly over the course of the summer. Locally, the first movie brought in
more than 14.4 million spectators and $102 million.
The movie is a continuation part of the Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds. The
movie began with the Guardians, planning a new trial for Su-Hong the paragon of the
firefighter Kim-Ja-hong, after he turns out a vengeful spirit in The Two Worlds. After all of
the troubles Su-hong did to the Guardians and the Gods. He was given another chance by
King Yeomra, for reincarnation if Hae Won-maek and Deok-choon go down to the real world
and bring back an elderly man who has surpassed his allocated lifespan. However, when the
Guardians went to the Earth, they encountered challenges, snags and secrets along the way
for each of the Guardians to deal with.
In terms of the plot, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days was complex. Due to the
Guardians quest becomes ever more difficult as their quest inadvertently sucks them back
into their past lives. In exchange for allowing Soo Hong to go through the trial, Yeomra
demands that they bring the soul of Heo Choon Sum (Nam Il Woo), an elderly grandpa that
has already escaped the grim-reapers several times. The grandpa’s home is protected by a
house god, Seongju (Ma Dong Seok), who fights off the reapers whenever they try to take the
grandpa. Seongju had been deeply touched by the family’s tough circumstance. After
Seongju fought the Guardians, he reveals that Haewonmak used to be a great general, and
mere mention of his name would scare enemies out of the way. Back to the trial, Soo Hong
had been granted reincarnation. The day that the grandson attends school has also come, and
Deok Choon and Haewonmak complete their mission.
The Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days was Even though lots of things are
happening the movie manages to give every aspect enough room and time to manifest in front
of our eyes. The story cast light on the guardians and doesn't waste time on things that were
already established in the first movie. All the cast are skilled in their craft and manage to
conveyed the emotions to the audience. Their acting works both in the funny and sad
moments of the movie. Gang-rim portrayed his role successfully as the leaders of the
Guardians, in bringing back Su-hongs life to Earth after he wreaked havoc on the first part of
the movie.
In terms of cinematic, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days had an amazing
soundtrack and computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects. The soundtrack fits to each scene
in the movie and the movie looks realistic due to the amount of CGI effects induced to the
movie. The camera work was great because it angles positioning of the camera in different
scenes was properly placed. the costumes and the sets are fitting and the CGI is great in
creating the fantasy world. While I was at parts overwhelmed by some stylistic choices and
the fast pace in the first movie, here I truly enjoyed them.
