Just creating an idea is not enough, one must take the first step to overcome the “fear of being

judged”. If not Our adult lives are impacted by it, frequently to the detriment of our professional
lives. Most people understand that we will fall while learning something new, like skiing, until we get
better. We cannot, however, put our business ego at stake in the same way. Because we are worried
that our superiors or peers will see us fail, we self-edit and eliminate potentially creative ideas. We
tend to stick with "safe" proposals or solutions. We remain passive, letting others take chances. An
example is Air New Zealand to redesign of the customer experience for its long-haul flights. Airlines,
as a highly regulated industry, tend to be conservative. To break through the cultural norm of
skepticism and caution, we began with a workshop aimed at generating outlandish ideas. A dozen
novel ideas were developed and prototyped by executives (and some were seemingly impractical).
