and the witness of his entire life. For the Jews? Yes,
because they affirm the reality of death, and want to
leave it at that. And also for the governor, who very
honestly admits to “being at a loss how to investigate
these matters” (Acts 25:20). As for ourselves, with
whom do we identify in asking ourselves the meaning
of the Resurrection for our life today? With these
“Christians” of Antioch, or with Paul, or with the scep¬
tical Jews, or with the honest and embarrassed Roman?
Without any doubt, we identify a little bit with each one
of them. But why?
a) A first series of feelings or motivations rises up
within us because of the scepticism of the Jews and the
embarrassment of Festus. Let’s try to analyze them. It
is perhaps somewhat delicate for me, an Orthodox
from Antioch, to venture into such an analysis, but I
shall try to do so in a spirit of peace and fraternal love.
The imperceived underlying facts of the question that
concerns us are of course very closely linked to the
well-perceived history of the Western Church that
began in the early fifth century. In this history of the
Latin Church, both Catholics and Protestants belong
to the same cultural and religious world. Now the ques¬
tion that we have to raise is a typical product of that
world.
It appears quite clear that the past history of the
Western Church was particularly sensitive to the suffer¬
ing involved in the Passion of Christ. From sculptured
representations of the Cross to the liturgical expression
of Easter, the historical realism of the suffering and
death of Jesus is especially evident. This sensitivity is
particularly keyed in to chronology and events, and in
this regard it is faithful to the literal meaning of the
