PAST PERFECT TENSE

We use past perfect tense to talk about something that had happened at an earlier time in the
past.

We often use past perfect tense with simple past tense. We often use simple past tense to talk
about action in the past and we use past perfect tense to talk about something before that

The formulas : Time signals :

(+) S + had + verb 3 + time signal. - after


(-) S + had + not + verb 3 + time signal. - before
(?) Had + s + verb 3 + time signal ? - when

Examples :

(+) I had gone to New York when you looked for me.
(-) I hadn’t gone to New York when you looked for me.
(?) Had I gone to New York when you looked for me ? Yes, you had. / No, you hadn’t.

(+) He had done his homework before he went to the mall.


(-) He hadn’t done his homework before he went to the mall.
(?) Had he done his homework before he went to the mall ? Yes, he had. / No, he hadn’t.
