ACTING I FINAL SCENE

My scene is Vietgone, I could not imagine I would have a time performingVietnamese play in

English. This time my professor surprised me a lot! I am writing this paper to discuss this play,

especially my character who I just acted. About the play in general, this is a love story between

two Vietnam War refugees who meet in an Arkansas relocation camp, the show features a

dramatization of the fall of Saigon.

My character is an old lady, who is dragged to American refugee camp by her daughter - Tong.

Because of moving to a new place, new country, Huong (my character) does not know the

language, and she is quite unadaptable to this new environment, she seems to be really frustrated.

Let’s look through some parts of my scene. Right at the beginning of the scene, Huong seems to

be really childish and frustrated by the strange clothes and uncomfortable small room of the

refugee camp although her daughter already warned her that this is just a refugee camp, not a

hotel: “All the clothes here are terrible,” “This room is terrible,” “This place is terrible.” Being

an old lady, I would have to make everything super serious, and I had to express my feelings in a

very bad way. Especially the part when Huong recalled her darling - Muu - passed away ten

years ago, and complained about their daughter. That part, I have to over do everything to make

it more and more serious.

The only obstacle that I have to deal with is the way my character expresses her feelings about

the poor refugee camp. That was really hard at first, but after practicing several times with my

partner and with my professor’s instruction, I got used to it and easily express my feelings as if I

was also that woman in a new environment.
