SIOP Lesson Reflection

SIOP LESSON REFLECTION QUESTIONS (be sure to elaborate on your answers...a short
paragraph for each question should be sufficient)

1.  Did you achieve both your language and content objectives?   How can, you be sure?

In the SIOP lesson both language and content objectives were achieved. The content

objective was students will be able to perform a skit to demonstrate a short distance relay race in

track and field, and the language objective was students will be able to verbally explain and act

out the steps to running a short distance relay race in track and field. I am certain that these

objectives were achieved due to students being able to both perform and verbally explain the

steps to running a short distance relay race in the form of a skit.

2. Do you feel you "immersed" the students in the vocabulary?  Based on your assessment, did
the students have their own understanding of each of the vocab words?

I feel as though I immersed the students in the vocabulary by explaining the words in

many different ways and having the students use them when acting out the skit. Based on the use

of formative assessment students proved to have their own way of understanding each of the

vocabulary word gaining similar understanding on the words in different ways.

3.  Do you feel you had enough interaction, giving students the chance to apply the
language/content with other students?  Why or why not?

I feel as though I had enough interaction due to incorporating group work and partner

work this giving student a chance to apply the language and content with other students. The

interaction was mainly through the skit and the fill and the blank worksheet.
4.  What are three aspects of the SIOP process that you find effective and truly need to be in your

lesson plans (especially if ELLs are present)?

Three aspects of the SIOP process that I find effective and truly need to be in my lesson

plan (especially if ELLs are present) are the building of background information, interaction, and

practice & application. Building background information is very important due to some students

not having the past knowledge on the topic (vital for ELL students). Interaction is critical due to

students being able to explain their thoughts, hear other people’s views on a subject, and possibly

gain an understanding on the topic. Lastly practice & application are very important due to

students being able to prove their understanding through worksheets or other activities that

express the topic being learned in the class.

5.  Looking back now that you've completed the lesson, what is one thing you would have done
differently?  Why?
One thing I would have done differently is providing students with written directions

and vocabulary with definitions for the skit. This would be helpful due to it providing more

assistance on what to do, and how the vocabulary should be used to create the skit. I could tell

some of the students were struggling due to them not really understanding the instructions or

how the vocabulary should be used.
