Jenkins was a jeweler , a master crafts man for the Silkstone Jewellery company . Ten
years ago he made a large diamond ring for the company .It was worth L.E. 27,000. At the
same time, but at home, he made a copy, worth L.E 2,000. The second ring looked exactly like
the first. Jenkins knew that it would pass all the usual tests –except one, perhaps. The
company accepted the copy.
Jenkins gave the much more valuable ring to his wife. It was her fortieth birthday,
and the couple flew to Paris for a weekend. Later the company sold the second ring of L.E
60,000. Six months later the buyer brought it back to the Silkstone's head office, "It's a faulty
diamond " he said "It isn't worth the high price I paid" he explained the facts. His wife's car
had caught fire in an accident .She had escaped death, but the ring had come off her finger.
It had fallen to the floor and been damaged in the great heat of the burning petrol
.The company had to agree. They knew that no fire on earth can ever damage a perfect
diamond .Someone had taken the real diamond and put a faulty stone in its place. The
question was – who? A picture of the ring appeared in the newspapers. A professional
photographer thought he recognized the ring.
The next day there was another picture in the papers, it showed a famous actress
walking out to a plane for Paris. Behind the actress there was a woman wearing a large
diamond ring. " Do you know the woman with the lovely diamond ring" the papers asked
their readers. At his trial, Jenkins asked the judge to consider eighty –one similar crimes
against the Silkstone Jewellery. The judge said," You are a master craftsman who turned bad.
I feel rather sorry, but I must send you to prison. Seven years ".

C - Reading Comprehension
4) Read the following passage then answer the questions below:-
Without sleep you may begin to see things that are not there and after ten days or so
there is even a danger you might die. Sleep happens in three stages, shallow, deep and
paradoxical. During shallow sleep we are often still able to react to outside stimuli. During
deep sleep everything is completely relaxed and growth and renewal of the body takes place.
During paradoxical sleep we seem to be sorting the information and dreaming about
things that confuse, frighten or worry us. These three phases repeat themselves during the
night. All are necessary for you to wake refreshed, even if you have been asleep only for an
hour or two. This is why doctors prefer not to give patients' sleeping pills.
The pills can stop this repetition of the three phases. Instead of pills, doctors often
suggest that you should have short sleep, or naps, of a few minutes during the day whenever
you feel the need .By doing this an adult may be able to sleep only three or four hours a night
and be perfectly healthy .So do not insist that you need "eight hours and two of those before
midnight. Just let your body tells you what it needs and allows the three phases to help you

IV - Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
In 1997, American university professor Jay Shafer did something most found
unimaginable. He moved into a home that was smaller than 9 square metres. Many flats
contain one room that is larger than that , but professor Shafer was" undaunted " by the
thought of getting rid of many of his personal belongings so that he could live full –time in
such a small home .He donated some of his clothes and books to charity and moved into his
first tiny home ,which he called Tumbleweed.
A house is classified as a tiny home if its living space is less than 13 square metres
.Although these tiny homes are small, they are made of quality materials. They can withstand
freezing temperature and storms. Moreover, they're portable as they are constructed on
wheels. Because of this, their owners often move them to different locations. Professor Shafer
had lived in the middle of an apple orchard, beside a lake in the mountains, and in the red
wood forest of California.
People choose to live in tiny houses for a variety of reasons, apart from being cheap
.The owners share a concern for the environment and a desire to reduce consumption of
material goods. Shafer recalls growing up in his parents' huge home, annoyed by the
exorbitant heating and cooling bills. A tiny home can be heated for an entire winter in a snowy
climate for less than £70.
This also includes the cost of heating water for showers and washing up. Moreover,
tiny home residents can save money, as they cannot buy anything unless they truly need it due
to space limitations. However, a tiny home still contains modern conveniences such as a
fridge, a toaster oven or a portable TV. Electricity is supplied through solar panels or wind
powered generators. The tiny house can be connected to a public water service via a tube.
A- Answer the following questions:
1-Tiny homes help people save money. Explain
…………………………………………………………………………………………………

B- Choose the correct answer:
1- The electricity in a tiny house comes from (the wind or the sun – a power appliance – a
power connection via a tube – the consumption of material goods).
2- The underlined word "undaunted" means (provided with enough space to live – still
enthusiastic despite difficulties –very or too expensive - strong enough not to be damaged).

From tablet to tablet
The Evolution of the book
The evolution of the book starts in around 3000 BCE, when clay tablets
were engraved with words. Twelve clay tablets were discovered in 1853 in
Iraq.
However, experts regard the scroll as the actual first form of a book.
The earliest surviving scrolls originated from Egypt in around 2400 BCE.
Made of papyrus, the Egyptians glued scrolls together to make ‘books’ that
were up to ten metres long. Egyptians used this technique for centuries
before the Greeks and Romans adopted it.
In around 200 BCE, the Greeks and Romans developed a new book
form – the wax tablet. You could write on these with a stylus, which was a
type of pen. When the two tablets were fastened together, they were called a
codex. Gradually, regular-sized sheets of papyrus, parchment and eventually
paper replaced the codex.
However, books weren’t easily available or affordable because making
them was time consuming and expensive. Only rich people could own books.
The biggest turning point in the evolution of the book was the invention of
the printing press in 1445 CE. A German, Johannes Gutenberg, was the
person who invented the mechanical way of making books. Consequently,
books became means of learning for ordinary people, which led to a spread
in literacy amongst the masses and a passion for knowledge.
In recent years, we have experienced another turning point in the long
history of the book and it features a tablet again, but this time it is not clay
or wax. It is the invention of the eBook, which we can download at the touch
of a button and read on a tablet. However, for the traditionalists, it is not the
same as the feel and even smell of a proper book. So who knows what the
long-tem future of the eBook is ?

An inspirational scientist
Something the size of a postage-stamp, could be a medical breakthrough that
will save millions of lives. According to biotechnology scientist Hayat Sindi, this
tiny piece of paper has the same power as an entire diagnostic laboratory. ‘My
mission is to find simple, inexpensive ways to monitor health,’ Sindi says.
In the developing world, powerful drugs are used to combat diseases like
HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis. But these medicines can cause liver
damage. In developed countries, doctors monitor liver function frequently. But in
isolated, rural corners of the world, health monitoring simply does not exist. The
tragic result is that millions are dying from the same drug intended to save them.
The small piece of paper is a low-tech tool which detects diseases by analyzing
bodily fluids.
Despite coming from a modest background, never travelling outside Saudi
Arabia or speaking a word of English, she moved to England to attend a
university. Against the odds, she became the first Saudi woman to study
biotechnology at Cambridge University. She got a PhD from Harvard University.
‘I want all women to believe in themselves and know they can transform
society. When I lecture at schools, the first thing I ask children is to draw a

tell them I’m a scientist, they look so surprised.’

Roughing it
Hugh Sawyer wakes up at 6.00 a.m., turns on the radio, gets up, washes and
shaves, eats some breakfast, and gets on the bus to London.
At work, he’s always dressed in a good suit, stylish tie, and polished shoes.
He regularly works out at the gym and often meets up with friends for dinner. In
short, Sawyer leads the typical city life with one exception. When his coworkers
return home in the evening, Sawyer goes to a field in the woods near Oxford.
The 32-year-old has given up every luxury to spend a year living outdoors.
“I want to make people think about how much they consume that is not
necessary,” said Sawyer. “I believe it is possible to do everything you normally
do while cutting back. I have realized I can live without a television, a sofa,
electricity, chairs, tables, and a fridge.” Before he took up his new life, he cut
down his belongings to just a radio, a few clothes, books, and photos. At night he
has a sleeping bag and a small stove. Despite the difficulties, Sawyer is enjoying
his challenge. His original plan was to live outdoors for six weeks, but he
decided to keep on after finding it “pretty easy”.
However, Sawyer still hasn’t experienced a winter outdoors. He admits he is
nervous. “It’ll be dark, when I get up and go to sleep and it’ll be miserable and
wet.” But a bigger problem might be returning to full-time city life. “The real
question is what happens when he finally stops,” said Psychologist John Collings.
“If he puts up with it for a year, it will be difficult to go back to the noise of the
city.”

An Introduction To Poetry
1-What's poetry?
It's the oldest form of literature. It was used even before man could read or write. Men sang or
recited poetry for thousands of years before they could write it down.
Poetry is like music because it creates beautiful sounds with words when expressing ideas and
feelings.
2-Alliteration:
the repetition of the first sound or letter of a succession of words as in
"With the wonderful water …………………….."
The (w) is repeated three times in this line.
3-personification:
to regard a thing or animal as a person as in
"I am busy," said the sea.
The poet personifies the sea and makes it talk.
4-Metaphor:
It's a comparison that is not made clearly or directly and is not made with clues such as "like"
or "as"
e.g.: "my life is a dream"
the poet compared his life to a dream without using like or as.
5-Simile:
Comparison of one thing to another using words such as "like" ,"as" ,"as though" ,"similar to",
"seems", or "than".
e.g.: "The woman moved like a fish"
the woman is compared to a fish.
6- Contrast:
the use of opposite words to make the meaning more clear as in:
lonely -- crowd dark -- daylight
7-Rhyme scheme:
it means that the words at the end of each line sound alike.
"I am busy," said the sea,
"I am busy," think of me,
Here the words "sea" and" me" sound alike.
8-Stanza:
Every poem is divided into stanzas . A stanza consists of two or more lines and it usually deals
with a specific idea.

Stanza(1)
Paraphrase:
Look at the girl from Scotland’s mountains! She is working alone
in the field and singing to herself. You can stop here and listen to
her, or go past her quietly so as not to disturb her. She is alone
working hard to cut to tie together the grain out in the field. She is
singing a sad song. Come and listen, because the deep valley is full
of her voice.

Blow Blow
By: William Shakespeare
Introduction about William Shakespeare:
He was born on 26 April 1564 in Stratford-upon-avon in England. At the age of 18 he married
Anne Hathaway and had three children and he was an actor, playwright, poet, and a theatre
entrepreneur in London. This poem is actually a song sung by Amiens in Shakespeare play
(As You Like it). In this song Amiens comments on how human insolence and lack of
appreciation is more bitter than the winter wind. At the beginning of the poem/song Amiens
speaks of the bitter cold winter wind. He died in April 1616.
Stanza(1)
Blow, blow, thou winter wind
Thou art not so unkind
As man’s ingratitude
They teeth is not so keen
Because thou art not seen
Although thy breath be rude
Heigh-ho! Sing, heigh-ho! Unto the green holly
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly
Then heigh-ho! The holly!
This life is most jolly
Paraphrase:
The poet asks the cold winter wind to blow as hard as it can. The cold wind is not as mean and
harmful as the unthankful people. Ingratitude hurts more than the icy wind. The bite of cold
wind is not very painful because wind cannot be seen. People who don’t thank you are worse
than the painful winter wind. This sad atmosphere makes our songs sad as well. The poet
believes that both friendly relationships and love hardly exist, Most friendship fake and most
love is silly and stupid. When we are alone with nature, away from ungrateful people, our
lives would be cheerful.

Stanza(2)
Paraphrase;
The poet talks to the cold harsh=black sky. He believes that the bite of the winter cold is not
as painful as the unkindness of ungrateful people. What hurts even worse than the cold is
when people forget to pay you back for your kindness. Even the bite of freezing wind, is not
as sharp and hurtful as a friend who treats you rudely and with ingratitude. This unpleasant
atmosphere creats a feeling of sadness which make our songs sorrowful. When we are alone
with nature, away from ungrateful people, we would be able to sing happily.

Commentary
This poem is a part of a play by Shakespeare called (As you like it). The poem compares
nature (the cold wind) with man’s rude behavior. By using contrast, Shakespeare is able to
