or any other interruption of the supply for a period of up to 45 seconds, should not require the
equipment to be manually re-initialized.

The uninterruptable power supply (UPS) units, provide continuous source of power during
this transition, from main power supply to emergency power supply, to ensure the ECDIS can
keep running smoothly.

The OOW will not notice any changes on the ECDIS during this transition. However, if the
main or emergency power source is not established within 45 seconds, the ECDIS will
initiate the shut-down procedure.

1.3.3 System Dongle

The system or hardware dongle is required to start the ECDIS.

It contains the PIN, the "User Permit" number for ARCS charts and the "User Permit"
number for S-63 charts.

On start-up, the system compares permit codes and the product type identifier stored on the
dongle to the corresponding data in the system configuration file. If the data does not match,
the ECDIS will not be authorized and it will display a warning message.

The ECDIS will not run without the system dongle.

1.3.4 eToken Device

The eToken device is a hardware dongle which

 contains the System ID

 has to be plugged into a USB port on the ECDIS
 is needed to import C-MAP Ed. 3 formatted charts such as C-MAP ENC

 2.3.1 North Up
The chart orientation can be changed from the “Bearing Mode” combo box in the chart
information area.

The default chart orientation mode for the ECDIS is North-up.

[N Up] orientation displays the chart always towards true north, similar to paper charts.
2.3.2 Course Up
[C Up] orientation rotates the chart upwards, according to the ship’s current heading.

However, the chart orientation will not follow any future heading changes. Instead it stays
oriented towards the same direction.

To orient it to a new heading, select the [C Up] mode again.

Chart objects, such AtoNs, will always face upward.

2.3.3 Course Up (Angle Setting)

[C Up (Angle Setting)...] orientation rotates the chart towards the defined course "Angle".

position sensor input. When the own ship reaches the predetermined limit, the
chart is automatically shifted in order to keep the own ship on the screen.
 [RM]: In Relative Motion, the own ship stays in the same position on the
display. The chart, including chart objects, moves relative to the ship’s
position.
 [Free]: The chart can freely be moved and rotated on the display regardless of
the own ship’s direction. While the own ship is moving, it can disappear from
the screen.

2.3.7 Mode Change by Operation

There are some cases, where the motion mode will change automatically from the
current mode to another one. For example:

 When the chart moves and the own ship is not displayed anymore on the
chart area, the motion mode switches automatically to [Free] mode.
 When the [HOME] button is selected, the [Free] mode changes automatically
to “TM” mode.

2.3.8 Redraw Feature

feature as a “coming home” function.

While in [TM], the ship position is dependent on the “Border Range” setting.
While in [RM], the ship will be re-centered.

The [HOME] button can always be used to bring the chart area at the own ship position,
while in “Free” mode.

2.4.2 Moving the chart with the Cross-Hair Cursor

To center the chart to a specific position, move the cross-hair cursor over that particular point
and click on it. This applies only in [TM] and [Free] motion modes.

When [RM] is selected, the cross-hair cursor’s position becomes the own ship’s display
position.

2.4.3 Moving the chart with the Hand Cursor

The ECDIS calculates the center of the triangle automatically and assumes it as the observed
position. If there is any doubt about the automatic plot, it can be manually set as well.

Click on [Plot by cursor] and move the cursor in the chart area to the assumed position. Click
to set the position fix.

3.5.6 Offset of Plotted Position

If there are sound reasons that the currently activated position source, such as GPS or DR, is
erratic and the position derived by LOPs is more reliable, the difference between the
displayed and observed position can be defined as an offset.

To activate this function, click on the [Plot] drop-down menu and select [Offset to plotted
POSN(Main)] for the main sensor or [Offset to plotted POSN(Sub)] for the secondary sensor.
Set the desired LOPs by selecting the corresponding checkboxes and click [OK].

For GPS, the difference between the indicated position and the observed position is set as a
permanent offset to the GPS position. In DR mode, the difference is used to correct the dead
reckoning position.

3.6.1 MOB

information received from navigational sensors. Therefore, thorough knowledge of the management
and handling of sensors as well as interpreting the related alarms is crucial to the safety of
navigation.

4.1.1 Alarms
Alarms are high-priority alerts. Their condition requires immediate attention and action by
the bridge team, to maintain the safe navigation of the ship (e.g. to avoid navigating into
shallow waters and risk grounding).

Alarms have the following operational status:

 An unacknowledged alarm is displayed with a red flashing triangle and a speaker
symbol. It triggers an acoustic signal consisting of three short audible signals every 7
to 10 seconds.

FLASHING SYMBOL

 A silenced but unacknowledged alarm is displayed with the red flashing triangle and a
speaker symbol crossed out.

PRESS SILENCE BUTTON

 An acknowledged alarm is displayed with a red triangle and an exclamation mark,

until rectified.

PRESS ACK BUTTON

flashing circle and a tick mark.

Note: Warnings can escalate to alarm priority after a limited time period not exceeding 5
minutes or after a user selectable time.

4.1.3 Cautions
Cautions have the lowest priority of an alert. They give awareness of a condition which does
not warrant an alarm or warning condition, but still requires attention and consideration.

Cautions are displayed with a yellow square and an exclamation mark, and do not generate
any acoustic signal.
4.2.1 Alert Notification Area
When an alert occurs, the alert status, the contents of the alert and the occurrence count are
displayed in the Alert Notification Area.

In addition, a quick overview bar, pops-up from the relevant alert category button. The
numbers on these buttons indicate the number of times the relevant category of alert has
occurred. If no active alert is present, the relative box will be grayed.

[ACK] button of the alert detail dialog or press the [ALERT ACK] button of the
trackball operation unit.

Note: When there are multiple alerts, perform the same operation for each by displaying the
details dialog box using the corresponding alarm, warning or caution buttons.

4.3.1 Sensor Alerts

Any loss of connection or malfunction of any connected sensor will trigger an alert.

For example, a warning will be triggered by the system if the input from an EPFS source is
lost. For less crucial sensor data, e.g. time information or backup data for COG/SOG, a
caution will be triggered.

4.3.2 Route Alerts

During route monitoring the ECDIS can generate various alerts to inform about
necessary actions:

 the “Cross Track” alarm is triggered when the own ship leaves the defined
XTD corridor
 the “Course difference” warning is triggered when the ship deviates from the
own course for more than the set limit
 the “Arrived at WOL” and “Arrived at WPT” warnings are triggered, when the
ship reaches the wheel over line or the waypoint respectively. For the last
waypoint of a route, the “End of Track” alarm will be triggered instead.

4.3.3 Look-ahead Alerts / Chart Alerts

The following navigational alerts can be triggered by the system:

 The “Crossing Safety Contour” alarm will be triggered when the look-ahead sector is
detecting the crossing of a safety contour

If the ECDIS is used as the primary means for navigation, certain backup arrangements must be
established in order to ensure a safe takeover in case of an ECDIS failure.

9.1.1 Backup Arrangements

An adequate backup arrangement is essential to provide continuity in the event of a failure or
malfunction of the main ECDIS.
The IMO Performance Standard does not provide details about specific equipment to be used
as backup. Instead, it provides the functions and capabilities which need to be met by the
backup arrangement.

There are several ways to realise such a backup in practice:

One option is a second independent ECDIS, in order to guarantee that a safe and seamless
transfer of navigation, from one station to the other, is possible.
An approved ECS, capable of displaying ENCs, can be considered as backup or even a Chart
Radar, if it has been specifically approved as such.

Another option is, to carry a full folio of paper charts covering the area of the intended
voyage. Those charts must be maintained and updated in the usual manner.
In order to plan backups of important data, you should check which backup arrangements are
present on your ship.
9.1.2 Confirming System Information

operation unit".

Confirm the new software version number via the [Software] tab, in the "System
Information" dialogue.
9.1.2 Special Instructions about Main and Backup ECDIS
To provide continuity in the event of failure, it is recommended that the backup ECDIS is put
into Operation and user data should be copied or synchronized while the main ECDIS is
performing faultlessly.

User data such as routes, navigation record, user chart, saved as backup, are not automatically
copied from the main ECDIS to the backup ECDIS. Therefore user-created data has to be
copied and synchronized manually.

Charts are not automatically copied or synchronized between the main ECDIS and the
backup ECDIS. They have to be installed and updated individually.

The navigation record is saved independently on the main and the backup ECDIS.

When turning on the power of “No.1 ECDIS” (main ECDIS) or the condition of “No.1
ECDIS” is restored to normal while “No. 2 ECDIS” (backup ECDIS) is working as a main
ECDIS, “No. 2 ECDIS” works as a backup arrangement and “No.1 ECDIS” starts working as
a main ECDIS.
