What is Environment ?
• Some scientists define environment as ‘’everything that
is not me”
• We can say that everything present outside an
individual is called its environment
• This outside world in which we live ,being a part of it is
our environment
• It has air ,water ,soil, light and heat .
• It also has plants ,animals ,rivers ,mountains and
deserts
• This nature to which we belong is our environment .

What is Environment Science
• It is a multidisciplinary science involving
chemistry, physics ,life science ,agriculture
,medical science , public health ,sanitary
engineering ,etc

Objectives ,Scope and Outcome of the

course on EEDM by Dr Shikha Agarwal
How is Environmental Science a
Multidisciplinary Science ?
• This is so because it involves components from various
branches
• Chemistry : Most pollutants are chemicals .Methods of
their removal ,their analysis ,effects on living and non
living systems ,all require the knowledge of Chemistry
• Botany : Without the knowledge of botany it is
impossible to know about the vegetation on earth
• Zoology : All animals including man are an important
component of the environment
• Physics : Knowledge of physics is essential to
understand various environmental factors like heat
,light ,radiation ,etc

How is Environmental Science a
Multidisciplinary Science ?
• Geography : It studies climate ,vegetation ,nature of soil
,natural resources their management and maintenance all
of which are a part of environment
• Metereology : Climatic conditions like wind flow ,rainfall
,snowfall ,temperature changes affect living beings and
hence are closely related to environmental science
• Sociology : Society is responsible for the deterioration of
environment .Increasing population ,social habits all affect
environmental science
• Other subjects like Engineering ,Microbiology ,Biochemistry
,Seismology ,Oceanography, etc are also directly or
indirectly related to the environment science.

Difference between Environment
Scientist and Environment Engineer
• They both address environmental issues.
However, there are differences in their
approach to improving and remediating the
effects on the habitat.
• The environmental scientist takes an
analytical perspective. He/she focuses on
what caused the particular condition, whereas
• the Engineer looks at how to correct the
problem.

What is Environment Engineering
• Environmental Engineering is a mixture of science and
engineering principles to provide a better environment,
to provide healthy water, air, and land for human
habitation and for other organisms, and to remediate
pollution sites.
• It also concentrates on finding the proper solutions in
the field of public health, such as arthropod-borne
diseases, implementing law which promote adequate
sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas.

research centres, NGOs and various
governmental departments working towards
green development.
Objectives ,Scope and Outcome of the
14
course on EEDM by Dr Shikha Agarwal
Scope
• Candidates with M.Tech in environmental
engineering have opportunities to work for
government built assessment committees which
study and analyse the environmental risks
involved in certain projects. The report of such a
committee is then submitted to the concerned
authority for further observation.
• Scholars with PhD in environmental engineering
can opt for teaching jobs in colleges and
universities.
Objectives ,Scope and Outcome of the
15
course on EEDM by Dr Shikha Agarwal
Scope
• Various governmental and non-governmental
bodies require environmental engineers who can
work for designing of environmental policy and
regulation development, contaminated land
management and site remediation and ensure
environmental health and safety of people.
• Candidates with specialisation in hazardous waste
management and natural resource management
have higher employability as the segment is in
dire need of trained professionals.
Objectives ,Scope and Outcome of the
16
course on EEDM by Dr Shikha Agarwal

Role of Engineers in Disaster
Management
• Role of Civil Engineers
• With strong building foundation, the risk of collapsing of any
building can be easily prevented. A geotechnical engineer is
responsible for the construction of such high earthquake resistant
buildings enhancing the infrastructure.
• For the flood control and destruction of dams, the hydraulic
engineer provides all the required information about the various
bridges and dams and advanced designs for prevention.
• City planners and project managers study the
vulnerabilities providing proper guidelines required for provides
rough and tough infrastructure withstanding any outer force.

Role of Engineers in Disaster
Management
• Role of Civil Engineers
• Rescue operations and safety escape routes must
be established in every building along with
possible reconstruction of the entire building is
controlled by a structural engineer.
• Hazardous and toxic wastes, air pollution control,
drainage development and radiation protection is
handled by the environmental engineer which is
essential once the disaster has struck in order to
control the after effects.

course on EEDM by Dr Shikha Agarwal
Role of Engineers in Disaster
Management
• Role of Mechanical Engineers:-
• Contractors work along with the structural
engineers to come up with shockproof
infrastructure right before the construction of the
building.
• The planning of raw steel used in bridges, tracks,
buildings, which kind of cement to be used is
done by the mechanical engineers.
• Mechanical Quality inspectors are very important
who mainly approve the work of civil engineers at
construction sites.

Role of Engineers in Disaster
Management
• Entire piping and ductwork are executed by mechanical
engineers which are the critical part in the erection of
infrastructures.
• They deal with all the government approval work which
involves official permission and clearances.
• Project Commissioning of the all the raw products and
systems installed during the building of any plant is
governed by mechanical engineers with the support of
electrical engineers. JKMEGA (Jammu and Kashmir
Mechanical Engineer Graduate Associate) has appreciated
the use of preventive mechanical gadgets such as
motorized gates, ultrasonic level gauges which are very
useful in flood control and take timely measures.

Role of Engineers in Disaster
Management
• Role of Mechanical Engineers :
• Engineers have been a part of the age-old revolution of
transforming the fate of the planet by applying novel
technologies and automating things that were once done
manually. Engineers work for the re-establishment of man-
kind in a disaster-hit area.
• The mission of saving this planet earth cannot be done
without including the expertise of mechanical and civil
engineers who have been trained to deal with such
situations with tremendous mock drills and discipline. We
cannot control such calamities but yes, we can definitely
follow the saying – prevention is better than the cure.
