EDUCATION 472 STRATEGY INSTRUCTION LOG TEMPLATE

DATE OF STRATEGY LESSON:

December 7th, 2022

TOPIC AREA:

Reading

GROUPING:

Individual Student- this strategy lesson was done with my case study student so only one student
participated

STRATEGY USED:

Story Map Strategy

RATIONALE and CONNECTION TO MARZANO’S TOP NINE:

The rationale for choosing this strategy was because my student for the case study struggled with
comprehension. The goal of this strategy was to increase the comprehension of the student by
creating a fun and interactive activity that would hopefully increase the student’s attention and
retention of the story. I thought that creating a story map while reading would not only be fun for
the student but would also increase his attention span for reading the story. We created the story
map together. The connection to Marzano’s top 9 is #2 summarizing and note taking. Obviously
there isn’t a summary being made or actual notes being taken but this is a way for the student to
draw or write down important information to help him retain the content in the story.

PA COMMON CORE STANDARDS and/or IEP GOAL:

Standard - CC.1.2.1.A – Identify the main idea and retell key details of text.

Standard - CC.1.2.1.B - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

STEP-BY-STEP EXPLICIT DIRECTIONS PROVIDED TO STUDENT(S):

1. Pass out the story map to the student and explain that we are going to read a story and
complete a story map as we read
2. Explain the parts of the story map and why they are important
3. Start by asking some question about the book to gain background information of the
student
4. Read the story and wait for the student to stop me when he feels as though something
needs to be added to the map.
5. If the student is not stopping me, I’ll stop myself and ask if he believes we need to add
anything to the map in certain spots.
6. At the end go back and fill anything out that we me have left out that we feel is important
(basically re-read story)
7. Once complete have the student read back the sections when asked what was important or
question related to the text
8. Lastly, have the student retell what happened in the story and question him without him
using the story map

RESULTS OF THE STRATEGY:

This strategy went well although I feel it could have gone better. I do not think looking back that
I chose the most appropriate book for the student. It did not contain as much information as
maybe I would have liked for it to contain. The student was able to comprehend and re-tell the
story back to me in the last part, but I just do not feel as though he was as challenged as much as
I would have maybe liked for him to be.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:

Once again, I believe that I could have done a better job obtaining a more appropriate book for
this strategy because I think a little more of a challenge and more information would have been
beneficial. In terms of how the actual strategy was though I thought it went as expected. I believe
the implementation on my end was a success and if I were to do it again with a different story I
would feel very confident in my ability.
