The walk above clouds……. The
Sapitwa ‘Kusingayendwe’ Summit

How it all began –The dream is yours
On 17/05/2020 -Siting with three friends at Lilongwe Golf Club
after a bad round of golf, frustrated and trying to avoid internalizing
the incorrect swing, we looked for a way out. Hiking or going to the
lake were options? Both had benefits but going for the hike was
more beneficial as the talk had moved from golf to fitness matters.
None of us had ever hiked let alone Mt Mulanje (the highest peak
in Malawi). So we agreed to use the long weekend 23-25 May 2020
to do the hike. I was to coordinate the hike.
On 18/05/2020 – Googled for tour guide details on internet, I was
impressed by one John Mishoni‟s recommendations and I
immediately contacted him. Talking to him, John sent through key
information on supplies and clothing recommendations.
First the dream –who you are, is not important but who you aspire
to become is more important (the conqueror of Sapitwa Summit),
the dream pushes up the hike before you physically climb. The
platform of pursuit (the standard) must continue to be raised to leap
beyond the present.
We climb the mountains not to stand on top, but to gain from
the ascent. Choose your mountains according to what you desire to
gain, and how that gain will contribute to your further ascent. True
success is not defined simply by how far you go, but how much
farther what you have gained will allow you to go.
Preparations
Not everyone on the planning table will travel with you –some of
the guys who contributed with brilliant ideas of how to make the
hike fun opted out of the travel but their ideas -made it to the
summit. Be ready to adjust the team size but keeping the team
dynamics balanced -from the original 4 who had confirmed to
travel, only two travelled –disappointment is a reality of life. Build
your team around people who can motivate you along the way. A
shared sense of mission, with desire leading all other attributes, is a
formula for forged success. Regardless of your status you are a
member of the hiking team. No matter how brilliant and intelligent
you are, be ready to learn from „The Hike Guide‟. The Guide just
gives ideas of what to expect on your journey but you have to
gives ideas of what to expect on your journey but you have
to figure out the most suitable clothes in your wardrobe,
tools in your tool box and what to carry from the kitchen
Preparation for a new climb has to be a projection of what is
correct, since not only do you not know all the answers, you
often don't know all the questions. Plan according to what is
known, add to that for what is unknown, and be will be
filling the blanks as you go along. Do not carry excess
baggage up the climb; any additional weight slows you
down -„be as light as possible‟ –only essentials go up the
mountain. Allocate resources according to what is ahead;
always keep in mind how to get where you are going with
what you have. Breakdown the hike into hours, manage your
pace against the hour. Measuring against the distance may be
misleading due to different terrains. Define success per
segment of the hike…….what does success look like in the
next hour. A mountain is most intimidating when you view it
as one unbroken objective. But a problem as large and
complex as a mountain must be segmented into smaller,
more solvable problems
Day 1 –Lukhubula to Chisepo Hut
I was sure my starting altitude was 856m above sea level.
The first step was the most important, keep pushing forward;
you will be closer to the destination as long as you are on the
correct path. Only the rise to the first plateau could be
estimated (fully aware summit could not be seen from the
starting point). When you start the hike how you think is
more important than what you know –there will always be
more questions than answers. The terrain tends to change in
terms of geological features, vegetation, temperatures and
hospitality. Rivers, Springs, waterfalls, pools, boulders,
plateaus, cliffs, rocks, quicksand, overlapping roots, stumps,
all form part of the path to the summit –be ready to make the
best out of every environment you are going through. If you
allow yourself to be present to your surroundings throughout
the journey, you will witness the beauty every step of the
way. Presence of the mind –deal with the situation you are
currently faced with, avoid solving challenges that are not
yet.

Every activity during in the hiking process must answer the
questions „will this get me where I am going?‟ Does this help
me get to the summit faster and free from injury? Always
answer where you are going (the summit), and understand why
you are going there –if you leave the summit from equation
you are likely to go astray, relax or give up. Success at each
point of the hike must be measured in distance from the
summit not the distance from the foot of the mountain. Every
hike is different from the previous mountains you climbed
(having grown up in Bikita climbing mountains was a
childhood hobby, Mulanje mountain was different). The
plateau paths are the most dangerous sections –you face the
same objective hazards while your attention isn‟t focused
because it does not have to be „Will this get me where I am
going?‟ There is no better place to train for the mountain hike
than the mountain itself. Every mountain is different.
The improvement to reach the summit can only be gained on
the way to the summit. A sense of momentum is critical, that
desire to move the body is a precious resource (hard to get and
harder to hold) even to team that is immobilized and still be
going up. Improvisation, flexibility and adaptability, in the end
can be the most valuable resources –be willing to stretch the
resources you have, modify what you can to fill the gaps and
go without none essentials in order to complete the hike. The
key in every hike is to reach the edge of all you have known,
the falling point of courage and strength and yet still be drawn
to take another step towards the summit. I regret
procrastinating taking a picture, and the soft light that was in
the background vanished in split seconds –be ready with your
tools all the time
Chisepo Hut Experience
The sight of Chisepo hut brought smiles; we had reached the
second and final plateau for the day. The first day walking was
coming to an end; we were closer to the summit than when we
started in the morning. As you rise on the mountain, conditions
become increasingly hostile and alien. We arrived at Chisepo
hut around 1600hrs. The hands were freezing already. When
you arrive at a place so unfamiliar, you feel out of your
element. We could not wish to go back to warmer Chambe hut,
it was 3 hrs away. That means the same walk the next day and
still feels the same hostile temperatures. To perform at a high
level in a new environment, you must spend time there to make
that environment feel like home. Living with the difficulties
makes you at home in the extreme
The Summit Chase
The hike to Chisepo hut was tough enough, but you can‟t lower
the mountain so that you can raise yourself. The mountain
remains unalterable; the only thing malleable in the process is
your resolve. If you are not afraid, you have probably chosen too
easy a mountain. To be worth the expedition, to field a team to
climb this mountain, it had better be intimidating. If you don't
stand at the base uncertain how to reach the summit, then you
have wasted the effort to get there. Keeping telling yourself if I
can manage a step backwards I can manage one more in front.
The real secret in climbing is reaching the edge of all you have
known, to be at the failing point of strength and courage, and yet
still be drawn to take another step towards the summit.
Decisions are made in answer to the mountain -the best plan is
the plan that works, you must be willing to abandon the original
strategy whenever the situation demands. Our initial plan was to
leave Chisepo hut by 6am get to the summit and decent to the
foot of the mountain on day 2. However, upon realizing the
amount of care that was needed to get to the summit, we
abandoned the idea of getting to the foot of the mountain and
settled for Chambe hut instead. Every team member must
contribute their best to the cause when needed as long as it
advances the team towards the summit
The most important attitude when leaving the ground in new
terrain is to accept that there is a good chance you will fall off. If
you don't fall, you might not have gone far enough. Put in place
a system of protection to keep your falls from being fatal, and
each misstep can accelerate your ascent because you learn more
quickly the correct way to climb. Not all boulders on the path
are still holding firm, if nothing else, falling teaches you in a
dramatic way how not to climb that particular piece of rock.
When you fall, you have both pushed into the unknown and
come back with insight of what lies ahead. But to reach the
summit, you must climb beyond the point where you fell from.
The higher you get on a mountain, the more you feel exposed to
negative things that might happen. We were told there are some
sections of the climb where we would need to crawl due to steep
slopes. You can‟t dodge a slope or a rock until it falls. The
mountain is known for fog and mist in the later parts of the day,
but you cannot stay in your tent afraid of a possible storm while
the sun is shining. On a clear blue day, you climb like it‟s clear,
matching action to opportunity. Don't let yourself be stopped by
your own apprehension. You need to react at each point to the
true environment that you are faced with, not an imagined one.

The longer you stay in the mountain the higher your chance
of experiencing a storm. Storms tend to be random events,
untimely and roaring when you are most exposed. When
faced with a challenge or harsh conditions, do not end the
climb, suspend the climb, you don‟t need to be comfortable
but keep alive. It's not the severity or the duration, but how
you weather a storm that counts. Climbing down the
mountain in thick fog meant it was going to be a slow
process but keeping positive and motivated was the key.
Harsh conditions require planning, tactics, and discipline to
make it through to the end. To still reach the summit, you
must react in a way that best preserves your effectiveness to
climb when the storm ends. The greatest gain on a mountain
comes not from the first 90 percent, but in finishing the last
10. After finishing the steep slopes it was the ascending from
2800m –3000m above sea level that had boulders, dungeons,
caves and narrow paths between rocks that required most
from me.
After the summit
You never arrive at a summit alone but with your teammates
who shared your struggle and fought every inch of ground
gained (My friend Bensam & Guide Uncle John Mishoni).
But you also bring the heroes who inspire you, the mentors
who take the time to teach you, your supporters who cheered
you up all the way. All of their names belong on the summit
register, so when you arrive there, you know you will be in
good company. At the summit, you can recognize how far
you have become. You are a fundamentally different person
at the summit than you were at the base. You have improved
your climbing skills, but, more important, your belief in your
potential has soared with your accomplishment. From the
summit you can see not only where you have been, you can
also recognize the person you have become. That
transformation is achieved not by standing on the summit,
but in the journey to get there. The summit may be the end of
your climb, but it isn't the end of your ascent -be careful not
to let that accomplishment stop your continued ascent. You
have acquired a new level of skill, performance and belief,
and that acquisition calls for a new application –Keep
climbing. Celebrate reaching the summit but understand the
summit isn't the real goal of your climb, but the end of your
goal, the final marker of your accomplishment.

Look beyond the summit to envision where you can go.
Imagine your next summit while you can still see clearly from this
one, for beyond the summit all the foothills that looked so
enormous on the trek to your mountain will seem small. Of the
nameless, unclimbed mountains all around you, only the most
formidable will stand out against the transformed line of your
ascent. A mountain well within your ability is not only a
misspending of resources; it is a loss of opportunity across a
lifetime of potential achievement. Each mountain you climb will
change you, and the more challenging the mountain, the more you
have to gain from the ascent. Your mountains include not only
those you have climbed, but the mountains that others have
climbed whose lessons you internalize; and the mountains you
dream about climbing (discussions with other mountain climbers
at Chisepo hut), which make you better before you ever set foot
on them, and inspire you even if never set foot on them.
The overwhelming challenge, unexamined, can exceed your belief
that you can rise to meet it. Under the shadow of the mountain,
you must overcome your paralysis with analysis to understand
your apprehensions. The weight of the specter can be left behind,
but only if you consciously leave it there. There are many
obstacles in finishing a climb, including fatigue, exposure, and
lack of resources, but it is rarely the mountain that stops you from
climbing it. In a difficult situation, the norm is not to fail but to
give up. Faced with the prospect of failure, many people turn back
when they could still reach the summit. Before you turn back,
don't ask if it is possible to finish the climb, ask instead if it is
impossible? The answer is never „Yes‟. There are no helicopters to
take you to the summit, „You hike your way up‟, descending is
real and requires more care than power. Pictures –Grab the
moment, weather and light changes rapidly –does not wait for you
to set up –stay alert and ready. You can‟t climb a mountain with
downhill thoughts.

Financial independence is not a
chance game. Life is not risk
free, however. Even a simple act
of crossing the street is a life-
threating act. Everyday someone
gets hit doing just that, so we all
take risks. In fact, I have a
problem with people who think
faith is dump, because we all
live most of our lives by faith.
Getting on to the plane, for
example, and literally staking
our very life on few engineers
and pilots; taking and injection
at the hospital; or even sitting on
a chair, all are associated with
faith.
In matters of finance
independence the youth have
tremendous advantage and every
year‟s delay is costly. It is
different matter though, when
one expects to become
financially independent on the
basis of chance (gambling or
wanting to marry a rich man) or
excessive speculation. A set up your own company. At
winning attitude should not be
construed as success without
toiling. You can be financially
independent to start thinking big.
A key financial success is to
treat your money or savings as
your employees who must work
for you. When you borrow
money, you are using other
people‟s money. Their money
then works for them day and
night, 24 hours a day, seven days
a week, 52 weeks a year. In
other words, you pay these
people interest all the time,
whether you trade with the
money or not. The truth is that
your saving also can work for
you in a similar way around the
clock. If you invest money it will
work for you 24 hours a day, 7
days a week and 365 days a
year. Even if you put your
money in a savings account,
your money is partially working
for the owners of the bank. That
is why the bank‟s lending rate is
always several percentage points
above or sometimes even up to
double what they pay you on
your deposit. For that privilege
they compensate you with small
interest. Your money works for
the bankers.
When you invest as owner
directly in a company by buying
stocks and shares your money
works fully for you for better for
worse. The same is true when
you invest in a mutual fund or
this point it is worth noting that
time is needed to achieve the
best things in life. It takes 12-13
years of basic education and
between 7-10 years of university
education to become a doctor. It
takes time and practice to win an
Olympic gold medal, and great
skills and dedication to be an
artisan. The same is true of
financial success. One has to get
the basics right-basic
knowledge, strategies and game
plans. But even the best plans
would mean nothing unless one

is willing to allow investments to
mature, to resist temptation of
plucking the fruits on the first
sight. It‟s advisable thereby
against committing too much
into long term investment so that
one is not tempted to dip into it
every now and then to meet
short-term demands.
You may have to start now,
invest in farming, in writing, in
freezes or baking, in education
and even in technology you will
harvest good yields. Be
dreamers, dreaming is
characteristic of most successful
people. However, your dreams
should not degenerate into
fantasy. They must crystallize
into vision in order to become
the driving force for success.
Many of our dreams remain
fantasies not because they are
unrealistic in the first place, but
that they are left to remain
dreams for far too long. Dreams
must be anchored in concrete,
time-bound goals. This is what
distinguishes mere dreamers
from achievers. There‟s a price
for every success and financial
success is no exceptional. Old
fashion commitment,
hardworking, discipline and
patience are needed to achieve
financial success. Financial
independence means controlling
present consumption in favor of
the future. However, don‟t
sacrifice your integrity in the
quest of financial independence.

There are so many things that
need to be said and done
before the year comes to an
end. Looking down back on
life and go back in January,
did we know for sure that we
would be what we are today?
Many plans and anticipations
achieved and failed are
making us determine what
kind of a year we had.
However, all years, months,
weeks, days, hours, minutes
and seconds are all the same
before the Lord. There is no
day that is greater than the
other, neither is there a year
good than the other. What
makes a day greater or worse
is our perception and actions
towards the day.
It is wisdom thereby to know
that changing of a year is not
changing of things. The way
we approach a new year,
ultimately determine the
outcome of that year in life.

With faith we know that every
year has good things for us
but with procrastination we
end the year without getting
something. If 2022 has been a
bad year, 2023 shall be worse
unless we change our
mindset.
In faith, we find strength and
diligence. Strength when all
seems lost, and diligence
when answers take a long
time in coming. Faith brings
peace when human hope
caves in to failure. It causes
us to believe against all odds
and completely ignore our
five senses. Faith doesn't care
what you see, hear or feel; it
is based on God's word and
even without visible sign, it
prepares us to receive what's
been promised. Just like
mosquitoes sings before
biting us, faith drives us to
celebrate our achievements
because we believe we
already have them.
Faith cannot be shaken; it
revolts against injustice. Faith
does not see failure as the
end, but welcomes difficulties
by observing opportunities in
them. It is true that some of
our failures came because of
fear to lose and we end up
failing. Faith is the courage to
take risks, and mostly to stand
firm until the end: the

salvation of soul. Yet if you
don‟t protect your faith, you
run the risk of losing it. That‟s
because doubt, its antonym
and enemy, has the power to
make it falter and flee from
sacrifice. Together, faith and

which brings nonentity into
existence. In 2023 doors that
saves will be many, but all of
them will be narrow, only
those with aggressive faith
shall go through them.
The wise understand that
investing in faith is investing
in their own life, and that in
due course they shall harvest
good fruits. Without faith
surely there can‟t be any
sacrifice or investment. And
without sacrifice, you can‟t
act your faith. We need to try
to fly; otherwise we shall
eternally be chickens.
Be like an olive tree having
strong and deep roots to
provide you with strength and
longevity. Be born in the Lord
and your faith shall be deep
rooted in his word. Only those
who are allied to the most
high have balance, strength
and firmness of faith to be
established and overcome in
this corrupt world.

In these strange days that most young ladies are just idle
waiting for boyfriends, husbands and even political parties to
sponsor their wants and needs, we have Nyalo stationery and
general dealers fully established by a sole young female.
Idah Longwe started going to Zambia to buy clothes and
drinks for business, from the little something she was saving
when she could not be employed upon finishing her
accounting course. She could arrive late midnight in
Lilongwe, braving rains, failure to be given her monies in
time by debtors, covid-19, inflation, political quagmires and

and kwacha instability but she could not give up
because she had a future to secure. Challenges could not
stop her from realizing her dreams and now she is the

A silence caused by deep thoughts happened

family of two kids. Why would it be the root
of all people‟s professions but the responsible

to go between contemplations to startle her.

It‟s even a job for the poor and not for smart
people even though it is a seed that produces
harvests for nation‟s bliss. Imagine the
garments they cloth themselves with? Hahaha
how about the ties, the jackets and the wigs of
the other gender as if they are hiding on
hedges, Bhudi pitied mockingly. Not only that,
poor houses with no electricity, bad roads to
schools, how would poverty even stop striking
us to become better with the debts each and
every month, Rose concurred. This was how
Kamataka family conversed after listening to
the news.
Even though this was the case, Rose never
stopped his passion for teaching. It‟s when she
could remember the most repeatedly quote
“Teaching is a calling” and what a calling
indeed being confirmed in her own experience.
Even all teachers who have been insulted
about their field never stopped loving and
caring for the future that would come against
them after shaping them into reliable vessels
of the nation. So with a thought of change
everything would be well again and the
architectures of the nation will be respected
and appreciated by everyone beginning with
the president and cabinet members.

Rose as a teacher thought of giving a service
in asking for justice and respect for all
teachers. I am not to blame anyone but at least
with the little I have, I am competent to fight
for it, she thought.
“Trying is better than indolence. With the
skills you have, fight for what you are and
have” these words echoed in her IQs to inspire
and boost her morale.
Rose‟s best content delivery in class was
English and not only was she best in the
learning area but she developed her writing
skills by writing distinguished beautiful stories
and poems which contributed a lot in her
learner‟s critical thinking and good use of
grammar. She thought of writing a story that
contained a speech given by one of the actress
who carried a teaching character to make the
nation stop thinking negatively about teaching
and teachers.

soldiers just to mention a few…. Any of the
good jobs you see today, deprived from the
mother of all professions. It‟s time for a
change, make teachers comfortable in their
own mother land as well. Without this
profession neither would we have any other
profession nor would you hold the position
you have today be known or acquired.
Teachers that are supposed to be a motivation
force to students to love school are now a
mockery to students to hate school because of
their poverty. Teachers are also human beings
with feelings; they need love, respect, and

winners of every tender that roams. Little do
they know that, a teacher with bitterness and
burdensome heart shall imparts sour seeds to
student to the detriment of good future as an
alternative of bright nation that we opt and
hope for. Yes! You may take your kids to
private schools and abroad, but no one knows
what tomorrow hold, if they happen to be
teachers will they be happy? East and west
home is best, even if we will go abroad still
finger shall be pointed that “Nyasaland” a
country well known of best quality education

Scoffing others as illiterates
Oblivious we are all students
In a school which professor Life is the principal

It is an institution that has no prefect

With dark corridor that deserves respect.
As birth certificate is the only qualification to enroll
Death certificate is the only recognition to get

You ought not to bamboozle to pass

You can embezzle the fees and miss class
Still, you will have to sit for exams
You ought not to be reckless to fail
Even if you study hard there‟s no distinction
It is a certificate with no results
The equity of the wiser and the duller

Everyone is pregnant of the last certificate

You can‟t abort it just as you won‟t carry it
Unlike other certificates we know
It is the only certificate that brings tears of sorrows
In the eyes of family and friends of the awardee
Following your exodus from your own graduation
A graduation that sees no celebration

If you fail, they will print it

subsequent to a gun short in the wee hours of
Sunday. Tension lingered in the hearts of short
tempered family members. Vulgar steps
disconcerting the foundation of the mansion
approached towards the master bedroom to
attest mobbing in the corridor.
In skepticism, Eunice collapsed and in terror
Brilliance fell on his face down. The one who
said Joy cometh in the morning had to witness
this fate. Tears on every cheek, anger on every
face, regrets roamed, and the room in pool of
blood as Davie lied in vain on the laps of
Chloe.
Mom what have you done!? Grace shouted
with showers of saliva punching her mother‟s
face…. Can‟t you comprehend she has brutally
killed my son; Rhoda reacted slipping on the
wall in disbelief. We should take him to the
hospital straightaway to save his life…..

Rhoda whispering to his son Davie. Though he
did not side with her, I discerned troubles
beckoning our home. It is true the tongue
prophecies, things commenced going from
good to bad and from bad to worse that he
could come home drunk to the detriment of
our home‟s pleasure. As discomfort became
unbearable, my pastor kept on encouraging

gave birth to my beautiful daughter Grace. He

time of distress. Two years later God blessed
me with beautiful twins in the name of
Brilliance and Eunice. Chloe paused to wipe
tears and sweat that were slipping enormously.
Happiness located our home once again and
we could enjoy our matrimonial privileges in

Davie certified his cravings to live poison to
his soul. He felt in love with me the day he

confess his love in shame of his poverty. Little
he knew I was also in deep love with him.
Though was love at first sight on the other
hand it was love in disguise. He then had to go
for money rituals to get rich and win my love.

his family in suspense.

you were desperate for kids, I had to kill you
to save my children and your mother. I am
sorry God please forgive me and my husband.
We sinned but for a good cause. Sobbing,
Chloe finished her story with a prayer of
repentance. Tears of incredulity covered their
eyes. No one envisaged that a story that fired
up with knock on the gate could end in horror.
Just as an ambulance carrying the body of
Davie left the gate, the police van carrying
Chloe was ferried.
